( b ) It is to be remarked, as an illustration of the personal nature of the English Baronage, as opposed to the feudal tenure of the continental Nobles, that, in a letter intended for foreign parts, the subscribers thereto go out of their way to add to their description the fact of their tenure of some Lordship ; thus tho' " Johannes ap Adam, JJominus dc lievcrstone " was not Lord Pcrcrstonc, but Lord ap Admit ; tho' " Henrietta dc Percy, Thminus dc Topcliie " was not Lord Topelivc, but Lord Percy, and, tho' in this case the signer was not Lord Norton but Lord Uhatcorth, a territorial description is added ; yet the very method of creating a Barony by writ (such writs being directed to those summoned, under their personal names, not under their territorial designa- tions, as, e.g., that to " Thomas do Chaworth Chevalier ") stamps the personality of any dignity thereby conferred.
