Sec. in Ireland, 1865- G6 and 1S68-70; P.O. [LI, 1866: President of the Board of Trade, 1870-74 ; Lord Lieut, of co. Essex, 1S73. On 2S Eeb. 1S74 he wascc. BARON CARLINGFURD of Carliugford, co. She, who was b. 1821, was for many years, as " Frances, Countess Waldegrave "( b ) " one oftlw leading members of Loudon Society , her "reunions " at Strawberry Hill (Twicken- ham.) ic, being in many respects unique. She d. in Carlton Gardens, Midx. 5 July 1S79, and was bur. at ltadst'jck, Somerset. Family estates. — Those of himself, sua jure, and of bis br. (the late Lord) appear, in 1883, to have been 21,823 acres in co. Louth : 758 in co. Armagh, and 6S6 iu co. Curlew. Total 23,265 acres, worth £18,086 a year. Those, jfwse <OMt ft* the Wal- degrave estates), consisted of 5,321 acres in co. Somerset ; 5,10S, co. Essex ; 2,347, co. Sussex ; 416 in the E.K., co. York; and S5, co. Midx. Total 13,287 acres, worth £21,103 a year. Grand total (England and Ireland). 36,552 acres, worth £39,279 a year. Principal Residences, Chewton Priory, near Bath, Somerset ; also Clennout Park, near Dunkirk, co. Louth, and Iiavensdale Park, near Newry, in Irelaud. CLEVELAND. Thomas (Wentwohth"), Lord YVentworth [1529], was, under the designation of "Thomas Wentworth, Rut., Baron Went- worth, of NcWested," cr. EARL OF CLEVELAND, co. York.(=) He d. s.p.m.s., 25 Mfirch 1 667, when the Earldom of Cleveland became extinct See fuller account under " Wentwohth," Barony by writ, cr. 1529, under the 4tb holder of that dignity. Earldom . I. 1625, to IGG7. ("•) Her first husband was John James Henry Waldegrave of Navestock, Essex (the eldest, tho' illegit. s. of the 6th Earl Waldegrave) who d. s.p. April 1840, aged 38. She m, secondly (a few months after his death) 28 Sep. 1840, George Edward (Walde- grave) 7th Earl Waldegrave, br. (by the same parents) to her last husband, but b. in wedlock. He d. s.p. 28 Sep. 1846, aged 40. By these matches she acquired the whole of the estates of the Waldegrave family in Essex, Somerset, and elsewhere. She to. thirdly (in a year's time), 30 Sept. 1847 (as bis second wife), George Granville Vernon- Hwcourt of Nunebam Park, Oxon, by whom, also, she had no issue. He d. s.p.m. 19 Dec. 1861, aged 77, and within 13 months of his death, she m. her fourth and last husband as above. To him she left, for his life, such of tho Waldegrave estates as she then possessed, with rem. to Earl Waldegrave in tail male. (*) It is believed that she was the first Dowager Peeress who [1846J adopted the method of using her christian name with the title (i.e. " Frances, Countess Walde- grave") instead of the prefix of " donxrger." In 1856, "Maria, Marchioness of Ailesbury " was bo styled ; in 1859, "Julia, Countess of Jersey;" in 1860, "Minna, Duchess of Norfolk ;" &c. ( c ) Eight noblemen (2 Viscounts and C Barons) were on this day cr. Earls, being ranked, by Royal declaration, as under, vis. : [I] Manchester (Moniagu) ; [2] Berkshire (Uouard) ; [3] Cleveland ( WcMworlh) ; [-1] Mulgrave (Sheffield) ; [a] Dauby (Danvers) ; [6] Totness (Carw) ; [7] Monmouth (Vary) ; and [8] Marlborough (Ley).
