He was 2nd s.( a ) of Sir William Weller Pki'YS, Bart, (bo cr. 1801), one of the Masters in Chancery, by Elizabeth, da. of the Rt. Hon. Willliam Dowdeswkll, sometime Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was b. 29 April 1781, in Wimpole Street, and bap. at St. Marylebone ; was ed. at Harrow, and at Trin. Coll., Cambridge ; LL.B., 1S03 ; Barrister (Line. Inn), 1804 ; King's Counsel, 1826 ; Solicitor Gen. to the Queen Consort, Nov. 1830 ; M.P. for Higham Ferrers, 1831 ; for Malton, 1831-36 ; Solicitor Gen., Feb. 1834, being Knighted, 26 Feb. 1834 ; Master of the Rolls, Sep. 1834 ; B.C., Oct. 1834 ; First Commissioner of the Great Seal, 23 April 1835 ; Lord High Chancellor, 18 Jan. 1836 to 3 Sep. 1841, and again 5 July 1846 till his resignation, through illness, on 19 June 1850, being raised to the peerage, on his first appointment, in Jan. 1836, and advanced to an Earldom, shortly before his retirement as afsd. He d. at Pietra Santa, iu the Duchy of Lucca, 29 April 1851, on his 70th birthday. Will pr. June 1851. His widow d. 6 April 1868, aged 65, at the Cedars, Sunninghill, Berks. Will pr. 12 May 1868, under £2,000. II. 1351. 2. Charles Edward (Pepys), Earl of Cottenham, Viscount CnowmmsT and Baron Cottenham, 1st s. and h. ; b. 30 April 1824, in London ; ed. at Eton and at Trin. Coll. Cambridge ; M.A., 1846 ; Clerk of the Crown iu Chancery, 1848-1851. d. unm. IS Feb. 1863, at Felcourt House, Surrey, aged 38. Will pr. 28 May 1863, under £9,000, resworn, June 1854, under III. 18G3. 3. William John (Pepys), Earl of Cottenham, &c, br. and h., 4. 15 Aug. 1825, in London ; ed. at Mag. Coll. Cambridge ; M.A., 1848. He m. 11 Oct.. 1870, at St. Paul's, Kniglitsbridge, Tbeodosia Selina, da. of Sir Robert Charles Dalias, Bart., by Frances Henrietta, da. of Edward (Law, 1st Baron Ellknborouoh. He d. 20 Jan. 1881, in his 56th year, at 94 Marina, St. Leonards-on-Sea. Will pr. 15 March 1881, under £25,000. His widow living 1888. IV. 1881. 4. Kenelm Charles Edward (Pepys), Earl of Cottenham [1850], Viscount Crowhukst [1850], and Baron Cotten- ham [1836], and also a Baronet [1784 and 1801], 1st s. and h., b. 18 May 1874, in Wilton Crescent, Midx. Family Estates.— These, in 1883, consisted of 3,439 acres, co. Surrey, and 1,117 in Cheshire. Total 4,556 acres, worth £5,674 a year. Principal Residence Tandridge Court, near Godstone, Surrey.
