" Helen, Lady Cranstoun " d. 1658. He d. s.p. possibly before his wife, but certainly before Jan. 1661/2. III. 1660? S, William (Cranstoun), Lord Cranstoun [S.j.ncphcw and h. being only s. and h. of James Cranstoun of Crailiug, co. Rox- burgh, slylcd Master of CranstounO 1 ) by his second wife Elizabeth, da. of Francis (Stewart), Earl of Botdwell [S.], which James was next br. to the last Lord. He accompanied King Charles II into England in 1651, fighting for him at Worcester, where he was taken prisoner and committed to the Tower. His estate was seques- trated, lands of £200 a year value being settled on his wife and children, and he was excepted out of Cromwell's " Act of Grace," April 1654. Hem. Mary, da. of Alex- der (Leslie), 1st Earl of Leven [S.] by his 1st wife Agnes, da. of ( ) Renton. He, being then of St. Margaret's Westm., was found guilty, 15 Jan. 1661/2, of slaying " Alexander Skringer Esq." with a rapier in self defence. See Midx. Sessions Rolls. He was living 29 July 1661. A Villi am (Cranstoun), Lord Cranstoun [S.], a and fat lie was a supporter of the Scotch Union in 1 707. lie m. before 1703, Jean, da. of William (Kerr), 2nd Marquess ok Lothian [S.], by Jean, da. of Archibald (Campbell), 9th Earl of Aroyll [S.J He d. 27 Jan. 1726/7- Bii widow survived him 41 years and d. March 1768. VI. 1727. 6. James (Cranstoun), Lord Cranstoun [S.], s. and h.( b ) He obtained an act in 1756 for the sale of estates in North- umberland (settled on his marriage) for the disencumbering his Scotch estates. He 711. before 1749, Sophia, da. of Jeremiah Buown of Abscourt, Surrey, and by her had i'12,000 (besides a larger fortune afterwards) an estate in the West Indies, kc. Hi: d. S and was bur. 14 July 1773 in Wcstin. Abbey. Will, as "of Portman square," dat. 23 March and j>r. S July 1773. His widow m. (4 months after his death) 10 Nov. 1773, Michael Ladh, Barrister at Law. She d. 26 Oct. 1779, and was in?-, 1 Nov. at St. James Westm., where on the 2 Dec. following, her Eecond husband was fair. also. VII. 1773. 7. William (Cranstoun), Lord Cranstoun [S.], s. and h., b. 3 Sep. 1749 at Crailiug, co. Roxburgh. He d. unm. in St. James Street, 30 July and was bur. 6 Aug. 1778 in Westm. Abbey, aged 27. Will dat. 12 July and pr. 24 Nov. 1778. VIII. 1778. 8. James (Cranstoun), Lord Cranstoun [S.], br. and h., bap. 26 June 1755 at Crailiug afsd. ; Lieut. R.N., 1775 ; Capt 1782, in which year being in command of a ship, he distinguished himself in the victorious engagement of Rodney (32 April) over Count do Grasse. He reed, the thanks of Pari. 17 Nov. 1795 for his brave resistance of a French fleet of double his number. He was appointed Gov. of Grenada, 1796, but d. before going out. He IB, 19 Aug. 1792 at Darnhall, Elizabeth, yst. da. of Lieut.-Col. Lewis Charles Montolieu, Baron of St. Hypolite. He d. s.p. 22 Sep. 1796 in his 42nd year, at Bishops ( a ) It appears that the heir presumptive to a Scotch Peerage was stilled " Master " tho' it is presumed this was ouly done where the appearance of an heir apparent was very improbable. An instance of such use by the heir presumptive occurs in a charter 23 July 1631, by "Alexander Lindesaye, Crafurdie Magister, frater legitimus et natu maximus Comitis Georgii, Crafurdie Comitis."
