He was b. about 1357 ; served in the Scotch war ; was knighted (by the Earl of Buckingham) 13S0 ; was one of the suite that conducted Anne of Germany from Graveliues to London in 1381 for her marriage ; Admiral of the West, 1383-S5 ; Earl Marshal of England, 1385 ; P.C. 1395. He m. Maud, said to be da. of Thomas (Camovs), Lord CaMOTS, He, who was blind a long while before his death, rf. 5 Dec. Ml 9, and was probably Aid-, at Ford Abbey.(*) Will dat. 29 June 1119. In 1410 he challenged the precedency of the Earl of Arundel, but the decision Wat against liim.{ b ) He m. Margaret, 2d and yst da. of John (Beaufort), 1st Earl of Somerset, sometime Marquess of Dorset, by Margaret, da. of Thomas (Holand), Earl of Kent. He d. at Abingdon Abbey, 3 Feb. 1457/8, on a journey to mediate between King Henry VI. and the Duke of York. Admon. 21 Feb. 14D7/S, at Lambeth. XV. 1458, 15 or G. Thomas (Courtenay), Earl of Devon, and to Lord Courtenay, s. and h., b. 1432, being aged 26 at hia father's 1461. death. He was a stout adherent to the House of Lancaster, ami being taken prisoner at the battlo of Towton 29 March was beheaded 3 April 1461, at York, when, having been attainted, all his honours became forfeited.^) He d. unm. ( :1 ) His is said to have been the magnificent monument at Tiverton destroyed towards the close of the 16th century (mentioned by Risdon in his " Survey," 1605-30), on which was the (well-known) curious inscription of " Hoe, hoe, who lies here ? 'Tis I, the Erie of Devonsheer With Kate my wife, to me full dere ; We lyved togeather 55 yeres," &c. The wifo "Kate " is, however, a mystery, and he certainly directs his burial to be at Ford Abbey ; not at Tiverton. ( b ) Sec vol. i, p. 149, note " d," sub " Arundel." ( c ) At his death the heir to his honours would, but for t/ic attainder, have been his next br. Henry Courtenay to whom, under the style of *' Henry Cotirtenny, Esquire," Edward IV gave, 27 July 1461, the manor of Topsham and some parts of the family estates in Devon.
