Ho was a most distinguished Diplomatist and Statesman: being five years (1610-15) Ambassador to the States of Venice; nearly tin years (1615/6 to 1625) at Hague to the United Provinces ; joint Ambassador to France, Dec. 1625 to March following, &c. B.C. 1625. He was Vice-Chamberlain of the Household 1625 to 1628, in which interval he was raised to the Peerage as above mentioned. He was (being then " Lord Carleton ") Ambassador Extraordinary to Paris, July 1626 and to the Hague, April 1627, where he was first Commissioner to invest the Prince of Orange with the Order of the Garter ( c ) He was o M.A. of Cambridge, 3 March 1627. In 1781, being then a Lieut.-Gen., he was made Commander-in- Chief in America, till the final treaty of peace in 1 783. From April 1 786 to 1 796, ho was Governor of Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, being on 21 Aug. 17S6, cr. LORD DORCHESTER, BARON OF DORCHESTER, co. Oxford. (°) In 1793, he ( a ) His sister, Lady Caroline Darner, b. 4 Slay 1752, well known as a sculptor, inherited the estates for her life. She d. unm. in 1829, when the estates passed to* the children of John (Dawson), 1st Earl of Portarh'ngton [I.], s. and ii. of the 1st Viscount Carlow [I.], by Mary, eldest sister of Joseph (Darner), 1st Earl of Dor- chester abovenamed.
