The hospitality and grandeur kept by him at the Castle of Douglas is said to have exceeded that of any other nobleman in the realm. He was Chief Lieut, on the Borders. Having resigned his claim (as Earl of Angus) " to the privilege uml preroga- tive of the first sitting and voting " in Parliament on the 13th (), he was, on the 14 June 1663, cr. MARQUESS OF DOUGLAS, EAHL OF ANGUS, LORD A15EKNETIIY AND JED11URGH FOREST [S.], with rem. to his heirs male and successors for ever. M.I. He m. secondly, 15 Sep. 1632, Mary, 3rd da. of George (Gordon), 1st Marquess of Huntly [S.J by Henrietta, da. of Esme (Stuart), Duke of Lennox [S]. He d. 19 Feb. 1660 in his 71st year, and was bur. at Douglas. M.I. His widow d. 1674, in her 64th year. [Archibald Douglas, styled " Loud Douglas, Master of Angus "1613, but, after 1633. sti/led Earl of Angus 1st s. and h. ap. by 1st wife ;(<) h. about 1609 ; was an extraordinary Lord of Session [S.l 9 Feb. 1639, continued by act of Pari. 13 Nov. 1641 ; High Chamberlain at the Coronation [S.], 1 Jan. 1651, of Charles II, by whom, 3 April 1651, he was cr. EARL OF ORMOND, LORD BOTHWELL AND HARTSIDE [S.]. with rem. to the heirs male by his second marriage( d ). He, like his Father, was fined £4,000 by Cromwell's act of Grace, 1654. He m. firstly (contract Nov. 1629 and May 1630) Anne, 2nd da. of Esme (Stuart), 3rd Duke of Lennox [S.J, by Katharine, suo jure Baroness Clifton of Leiohton Brcmswold. She who was bap. at St - Anne's, Blackfriars, 23 Nov. 1614, d. 16 Aug. 1646 in her 32nd year, and was bur. at Douglas. He m. secondly, 26 April 1649, at Wemyss, Jean, lBt da. and coheir of David (Wemyss), 2nd Earl of Wemyss [S.] by his first wife Jean, da. of Robert (Balfour), Lord Balfour of Burleigh [S.] He d. v.p., at Edinburgh, 15 April 1655. His widow, who had n jointure of 12,000 marks, m. 11 Aug. 1659, George (Gordon), Earl of Sutherland [S], who d. i March 1703 aged 70. She d. Jan. 1715.] (3) Archibald, Earl of Moray [S.], slain 1 May 1455 ; (4) Hugh, cr. Earl of Orinond [S.] 1445, executed 1455 ; (5) Sir John Douglas, Lord of Balveny, forfeited 1455, but escaped into England ; (6) Henry, in Holy Orders ; and (7) George, d. unm. before he was 15. With these ended the issue male of Archibald, the 3d Earl of Douglas (the bastard son of the " good " Sir James), that of the elder and legitimate Hue having ended 67 years earlier. (of the whole blood), Lord James Douglas, signalized himself in the French army, being promised a Marechal's baton. He was slain 21 Oct. 1655 at the Biege of Doway, and was bur, at St. Germain de Prex, Paris, M.I., where his age is given as 27, which, if his mother died 32 years before, must be erroneous.
