Anne, suo jure Duchess OF Hamilton, obtained that Dukedom for himself which had been enjoyed previously by two members of the family of Hamilton) which Duke William was a (") The Barony [of Tautallon and other considerable estates were sold by this Marquess. ( b ) His estates appear to have been chiefly in Lanarkshire in which county both Bathwell Castle and Douglas Castle were situated. These castles, at one time the inheritance of the Earls of Douglas (the black Douglas) were grunted by the crown, to which they had become forfeited, to the Earls of Angus (the red Douglas) ancestors of the Duke. On his Grace's death they devolved on his sister's son, the heir of line, who was cr. Baron Douglas of Douglas Castle in 1790. See that dignity. ( e ) As if in marked distinction to the Earldom of Douglas, of which, during 98 years there were eleven holders, (See p. 157, note "c") the Marquessate of Douglas, during 128 years was held but by three. ( u ) It should however be observed that tho' the petition of the Duke of Hamilton in 1762 was (like that of Iub opponent, the heir general) referred to the Lords, it was never followed by any decision thereon as to the Earldom of Angus. See vol. i, p. 101, note «g," 81( 6. "Angus."
