Hunsdon, was, on S March 1687/8, cr. EARL OF DOVER, co. Kent. He was b. .md b. of John, 3rd P.ahon Hunsdon by Mary, da. of Leo- nard Hyde, of Hyde Hall and Throcking, Herts. ; b. about 1580 (") ; K.B., 3 June 1610, at the creation of the Prince (Henry) of Wales ; sur. his Father as Baron Huusdon, 17 April 1017 ; was cr. VISCOUNT ROCHFORD ( L ) 6 July 1021, taking his seat20Nov. following, and was raised to an Earldom some 2 years later as afsd. Speaker of the House of Lords, 14 March 1011. Col. of a Keg. of Oxford Scholars, 16-14-46 ; P.C. to King Charles II. He m. firstly, before 160S, Judith, da. of Sir Thouias Pelham, Bart, by Mary, da. of Sir Thomas Walsingham. She, who was lap. 21 June 1590 at Laughton, Sussex, rf. at Huusdon and was there bur. 1 Nov. 1629 ( c ). He m., secondly, 6 July 1030, at St. Peter le Poor, London, Mary, widow of Sir William Cokatne, sometime Lord Mayor of London, da. of Richard Morris, sometime Master of the Ironmongers' Company, London, by Maud, da. of John Dadorne of Guildford, Surrey. She, who was bap. 10 May 1573, at St Leonard's, Eastcheap, rf, at Combe Nevill, in Kingston, co. Surrey, and was bur., from C'okayne house in old Broad street, London, 8 Jan. 1648/9, with her iirst husband in St. Paul's Cathedral ; burial regd. at St. Peter le Poor. Adnion. 5 Jan. 104S/9. He was bur. at Huusdon, 13 April 16G0. H. 1G6G. 2. John (Carey) Earl of Dover, Viscount Rochford to and Bahon Hunsdto, s. and h. by 1st wife, aged 12 in 1020. K.B. 1677. at the Coronation of Charles I, 1 Feb. 1626 ; on 27 Nov. 1040 he (being styled Viscount Rochford) was sum. to Pari, v.p., in his Father's Barony, as Lord Hunsdon; Col. of a Reg. of T'oot, 1642. Adhering to the Royal cause he was accused of high (reason in 164 1 ( ll ). Speaker of the House of Lords, 1 to 6 Aug. 1647. He m. firstly, 9 May 1028, at St. Barth. the Great, London, Dorothy, da. of Oliver (St. John), 1st Karl of Bolinghroke, by Elizabeth, da. and h. of William PauletT, She d. the next month, viz., 28 June 1028, and was bur. at Hunsdon burial regd., 29th, atSt. Barth. afsd ( C J. He m. secondly, 2 Dec. 1630, at St. Peter le Poor afsd., Abigail, sister of Charles, 1st Viscount Cvllen [I.,] da, of Sir William Cokayne, of Kushton, co. Northampton, by Mary, da. of Richard SloiiRis, and afterwards second wife to Henry, 1st Earl of Dover, as aboro mentioned. He d., s.p.m. 26 May 1677, aged 69, and was bur. 1 June, in Westm. Abbey. Admon. 9 June 1681 to a creditor. On his death the Earldom of Dover and the Viscounty of Rochford became extinct. His widow who was bt'p. 0 Aug. 1610 at St. Peter le Poor, London, el. in (») His eldest br. " Mr. Henry Cary," s. of " Mr. John Cary, Esauier," was bap. 15 Dec. 1577, and bur. 1 Jan. 1577/8, at Hunsdon. ( b ) As to the title of Roohfohd, Thomas (Butler), Earl of Orrnond [I.], was sum. to Pari. 14 Oct. 1495 (by writ directed " Themes Ormond dc Rochford, C/d'r.") as Lord Rochford. He rf. e.p.m. 8 Aug. 1515, and some 10 years later his grandson, Sir Thomas Boleyn (s. and h. of Sir William Boleyn, K.B., who had m. Margaret, his da. and coheir), was, on 18 June 1525, cr. Viscount Rochford, being afterwards (1529) a: Earl of Wiltshire, &c. He d. 1 538, having had but 3 children, viz. (1), George, Lord Rochford, beheaded v.p. May 1536, who d. s.p. ; (2) Anne, Queen Consort of Henry VIII, beheaded v.p. May 1536 ; and (3) Mary, who m. William Carey, and was mother of (Queen Elizabeth's first cousin) Henry, 1st Baron Hunsdon, the erandfather of Henry 4th Baron Hunsdon (his heir male, but not his heir general), the grantee of the Viscounty of Rochford, in 1521.
