James Douglas, one of the most powerful Barons of his time, by his 1st wife, Agnes, da. of Patrick (Dunbar) Earl of Dunbar [S.] was knighted before IS Jauy. 1391/2, sue. his father in 1420 in the barony of Aberdour, en. Fife, the castle and town of Dalkeith, &c, was one of the conserva- tors of the treaty with England 1424, Sic, and probably soon afterwards (1430 ?) "was one of the first persons dignified with the title of a Lord of Parliament," (?■) as [Qy.f] LOUD DALKEITH [S.] He m. firstly before 1397 the Lady Elizabeth Stewart, 3rd da. of Kino Robert II. [S.] by Auuabella, da. of John Drummond. He m. secondly before Oct. 1439, Janet, da. of Sir William Bohthwick of Borthwick. He d. about 1440. His widow m. George (CricHTOK), EaRL op Caithness [S.], who d. 1455. She was living 9 Oct. 1459. II. 1440. 2. James (Douglas), Loud Dalkeith [S.], s. and h. by 1st wife, who before or soon after his succession was deranged and was so declared by Act of Pari. [S.] 22 May 1441. He m. firstly Margaret, da. of James (Douglas), Earl Douc;las [S.] by Beatrix, da. of Henry (Sinclair), Earl op Orkney [S.J She died s.p.m. He m. secondly Elizabeth, sister of James Gifpord of Sherifi'hall, which James was appointed his Curator. He d. about 1456. III. 1456. $. James (Douglas), Lord Dalkeith [S.], s. and b. by 2nd wife, who having m. the Lady Joan Stewart, da. of King James I. [S.], was, on 14 March 1457/S, cr. EARL OF MORTON [S.], in which dignity this Barony was merged till the resignation made by the 3rd Earl, in 1540, of all his honours to the Crown since which date it, apparently, was not regranted with the Earldom.
