Coll. and Downing Coll., Cambridge; was an officer in the 1st Life Guards, 1S24; in the 58th Foot 1826 ; entered the diplomatic service, 1827 and was attache to various embassies. M.P. for Wilton, 1830-31 J for Coventry, 1831-35; for Marylebone, 1835-37 and for Tarn worth, 1808-71. He was Minister at Madrid, 1843-48, being, in 1848, dismissed by the Spanish ministry; Minister at Washington, 1819; at Tuscany, 1852 and Ambassador at Constantinople, 1858-65. He was P.O. 1845; K.C.B., 27 April 1848; Gr.C.B., I March 1851, being, some 21 years later, cr. a Peer as above, for his distinguished diplomatic services. He m. 9 Dec. 1 818, at Hatfield House, Herts, Georgiana Charlotte Mary, da. of Henry (Wkli.esley), 1st Baron Cowi.ev, by his 2nd wife, Georgian* Charlotte Augusta, da. of James (Cecil), 1st Marquess of Salisbury. He d. s.p., at Naples, 23 May 1872 when his peerage became extinct. His widow, who was b. II June 1817, d. 2 Aug. 1878. Baron Lytton of Knebworth, 1866.
