He was never sum. to Pari., but no sooner had he sue. to the estates that he began ("being a weak man of understanding ") to alienate them. Before Feb. 1538, he had sold Dudley Castle, to his cousin Sir John Dudley, afterwards the well known Duke of Northumberland, and having to subsist on " the charity of his friends," was "commonly called the Lord Quondam." (*) He m. (betrothal before 30 Oct. 1501), Cicely, da. of Thomas (Grey), 1st Marquess op Dorset, by Cicely, sua jure Baroness Harington and Bonville. He d. at Westminster and was bur. 18 Sep. 1553, at St. Margaret's, Westm. Funeral celebrated with heraldic honours on 21st. His widow, was iiir. there (under her maiden name( b ) as"(7ic Lady Cysslye Gran"), 2i April 1554. VIII. 1553. 8. Edward (Sutton, alias Dudley), Lord Dudley, s. and h. He was, v.p., in the Scotch wars, 1517, under the Protector Somerset, aud was made Gov. of Hume Castle after its surrender. He was sum. to Pari, from 12 Nov. (1554). 1 and 2 Phil, and Mary, to 15 Oct. (1586), 28 EH*. By letters patent, dated 31 Dec. 1555,( c ) " the whole Castle of Dudley " was restored to him, other lands having been so restored, 4 Nov. 1554, all of which had vested in the Crown, by the forfeiture of John (Dudley), Duke of Northumberland. He was made Lieut, of Hampnes Castle, in Picardy. Queen Eliz. paid him a visit at Dudley Castle in Aug. 1575. He mi. firstly, in or before, 1555, Katharine, da. of John (Buyuges), 1st Baron Chandos of Sudeley, by Elizabeth, da. of Edmund (Grey), Lord Grey de Wilton. She, who was Gentlewoman to tho Queen [Mary], d., s.p.m., and was bur., 28 April 1566, at St Edmund's, Dudley. He m. secondly, Jane, da. of Edward (Stanley), 3d Earl of Derby, by Dorothy, da. of Thomas (Howard), Duke or Norfolk. She, was bur., 4 Sep. 1569, at St. Edmund's Dudley. He m. thirdly, Mary, sister of Charles, 1st Earl of Nottingham, da. of Charles (Howard), 1st Baron Howard of Efflngham, by his 2d wife, Margaret, da. of Sir Thomas Gamage. He was bur., 12 Aug. 15S6 (with his parents), at St. Margaret's, Westm. Will dat., 8 July 15S5, pr. next year. His widow, m. Richard Mo.MrassoN (who survived her), aud d. 21, being bur., 23 Aug. 1600, at St. Margaret's Westm. M.I. IX. 158G. 0. Edward (Sutton, alias Dudley), Lord Dudley, s. and h., by 2nd wife, bap. 17 Sep. 1567, at St. Edmunds, Dudley ; raatric. at Oxford (Lin. Coll.) 21 July 15S0. Of him, writes Dugdale, that he " betook himself wholly to a concubine, on whom he begot divers [eleven] children, and so wasted hia estate in the support of her and them that he left not much of that fair inheritance which descended to him, and it so clogged with debts that, for the disengaging thereof, he married Frances, his granddaughter and heiress to Humble Ward, the only son of William Ward, a wealthy goldsmith in London, jeweller to the late Queen." As early, however, as 1593, the estates were in the hands of sequestrators. He appears to have been a person of infamous conduct ('•). He, however, on 28 Feb. 1639 expresses his willingness to attend the King, tho' not " in such sort as is required," inasmuch as he had " passed over " his estate to Mr. Warde for payment of debts. He d., s.p.m.s., 23 and was bur. 24 June 1643, at St. Edmunds, Dudley (°). His widow was bur. 12 Jan. 1649/50, at St. Margaret's, Westminster. Her will dat. 11 Sep. 1649, pr. 3 Feb. 1650/1. (•) Dugdale. ( b ) Her precedency by birth as the da. of a Marquess would be a great deal higher (i.e. next below that of a Countess) than that by marriage as wife of a Baron . (') Note that the summons to Pari, was before the restitution of the castle, militating against the theory of the Barony being a territorial peerage. (°) John Dudley alias Sutton of Sedgley Park only br. aud heir male of the last Lord (bap. 30 Nov. 1569) survived him and was bur. 3 March 1644/5, at Sedgley, as "Mr. John Dudley." Of John's five children, all were dead in 1660, and only one had issue, viz., Anne, m. Edward Gibson of York. Her eldest son, Edward Gibson, aged 18, in 1639 (Visit, of co.
