(1610), by Honora, da. of Edward Seymour, styled Lord Beau- champ (s. and h. ap. of Edward, Earl ok Hertford), which Ferdinando wa3 only s. and h. ap. of the last Lord, but d. v.p. 22 Nov. 1621, aged 33. She was b. 23 July at Dudley Castle, and bap. there 18 Aug. 1611 ; reg. at St. Thomas, Dudley. Being an orphan ( b ) at hor age of 10, she was In her 17th year given in marriage (settl. 17 Feb. 1623) by her grandfather and guardian, to Humble Ward (then in his 15th or 16th year), only s. of William Ward of Cheapside, London, goldsmith, by Elizabeth, da. (whose issue became heir) of Richard Humble, of Goosehays, in Hornchurch, co. Essex. She was raised to the rank of the da. of a Baron (" a,s if her father had been actually Lord Dudley ") 24 June 1635, in the lifetime of her grandfather ( c ), on whose death, 23 June 1613, she inherited the family honours. Her husband was knighted the following day by the King at Oxford, aud was, 23 March 1643/4, a: BARON WARD OF BIRMINGHAM, co. Warwick, with rem. to the heirs male of his body by his said wife.() He </. 14 aud was bur. 17 Oct. 1670 at Himley, co. Stafford. Will pr. Nov. 1690. The Baroness Dudley survived him nearly 27 years, being bur. at Himley 11 Aug. 1697, aged 86. XI. ll!97. 11. Edward (Ward), Lord Dudley, and Baron Ward of Birmingham, s. and h., b. 1631, sue. his father 14 Oct. 1670, and took his seat in the House of Lords, 5 Dec. 1670, as Baron Ward of Birmingham ; sue. his mother in Aug. 1697, taking his seat, 28 Jany. 1697/8, as Lord Dudley. He m. Frances, 1st sister and coheir [1073] of Sir Thomas Brereton, 2d Bart., of Houford, da. of Sir William Brereton, 1st Bart, (the Parliamentary-General) by his first wife Susan, da. of Sir George Booth, Bart. She was bur. at Himley 21 Nov. 1676. He cl. 3 Aug. 1701, aged 70, and was bur. the 8th at Himley. Will dat. 23 June to 31 July 1701, pr. 2 Nov. 1704. XII. 1701. 12. Edward (Ward), Lord Dudley, and Baron Ward ok Birmingham, grandson and h., being s. aud h. of the Hon. William Ward, by Frances, da. of William Dilke, of Maxstoke Castle, co. Warwick, which William Ward was 3d but 1st surv. s. and h. ap. of the last Lord, but d. v.p. 16 May 1092, aged 32. He was bap. 20 Dec. 1683, at Himley. He m. 9 April 1703, at St. Margaret's Westm. (Lie. Fac. oft'.) Diana, only da. andh. of Thomas Howard, of Ashtead, Surrey, Teller of the Exchequer, by Diana, da. of Francis (Newi>ort), 1st Earl ok Bradford. He d. of the small pox at Whitehall 28 March and was bur. 5 April 1704, at Himley. Will dat. 2S Jany. 1703, pr. 29 March 1704 and 10 July 1718. His widow d. 17 March 1709, in her 23rd year and was bur. at Ashtead M.I. Willpr. May 1709. Lords claiming the Barony and Castle of Dudley as " grandchild and heir to John, Lord Dudley" aud stating that in the reign of Queen Mary, " Dudley Castle with all its honours," &c, was eutailed on the heirs male of the body of Edward Sutton, which were (1) Edward, Lord Dudley, who d. s.p.m. temp. Car. 1, and (2) John, to whom " the Barony then came," who d. leaving two daughters, viz. (1), Elizabeth, who d. S.p., aud (2) Anne, mother of the Petitioner. This petition was referred to the Committee for privileges, but no further proceedings are mentioned. The claim of one who was not heir male, tho' he was heir general, to succeed a person in a title whose only (alleged) right was that he (tho' not heir general to the title in question) was heir male, is not likely to have had much attention paid to it. (") A most interesting table of the trcnte-deux quarticrs of Frances, suo jure Baroness Dudley (without a blank therein) is given by Mr. Grazebrook in his " Barons of Dudley." See p. 180, note " a." ( b ) Her mother, Honora, had d. beforo Sir Ferdinando, and wasowr. 23 March 1620 at St. Edmunds, Dudley ; Sir Ferdinando himself was &ur., 23 Nov. 1621, at St. Margaret's Westm. _ (°) Avery singular and apparently unique proceeding, she being only heir presump- tive to her grandfather ; very different from the case of a grandson and heir apparent. ( d ) His name appears in the Houbo of Lords iu the Pari, of 1661 (13 Car. II.; tho' it is to bo observed that the Barony ho held was less thau a Barony granted to him and tho heirs male of his body. So, also, Thomas (Villiers), Baron Hyde, appears to have sat in that House in right of a Barony (of similar nature) cr. 1756.
