Will pr. Sep. 1731. XIV. 1731. 14- William (Ward), Lord Dudley and Baron Ward of Birmingham, uncle mid h., being yst. br. of the 12th Lord. He was bap., 16 Oct 168( — ), at Hiinley. He took his seat, 2 May 1735. He d. num., 20 May 1710, at Himley afsd. and was bur. there. Aduion., 1 July 1740 and 26 May 1758. On his death the two Baronies separated, that of Ward, devolving on the heir male of the body{*) of the grantee by bis wife, Frances. (See "Ward of Birming- ham," Barony, cr. 1644, under the 6th holder thereof), while that of Dudley devolved on the heir general as under. XV. 1740, 15. Ferdinando-Dudley (Lea), Lord Dudley, nephew to and h. being s. and h. of Frances, wife of William Lea (who d. 31 Jan. 1757. 1741 aged 64) of Halesowen Grange, Salop, which Frances was only sister of the last Lord and d. 24 Jan 1737, aged 50. Ho was bap. 14 Sep. 1710, at Halesowen, and took his seat in the house of Lords, 26 Nov. 1740. He d. unm. at Halesowen Grange, 21 and was bur. 26 Oct. 1707 in Halesowen church, when the Barony of Dudley fell into abeyance between his sisters and coheirs ( b ). Will dat. 28 Oct. 1755, pr. 10 May 1758 («), («) The Castle and Lands of Dudley devolved on this heir male, who in 1763 was or. " Viscount Dudley and Ward of Dudley, co. Worcester," a title which became extinct in 1S33, but the Barony of Ward of Birmingham continuing, the 11th holder thereof was in 1860, cr. " Earl of Dudley of Dudley Castle, co. Stafford." ( b ) These were (I), Anne, who m. William Smith, and who assumed the stylo of " Baroness Dudley " as stated in the text. Her 2nd, but 1st surv. s. and h., Ferdi- nando Smith, d. 16 Jan. 1794, leaving a s. and h., Lieut. Col. Ferdinando Smith, who d. 20 July 1841, aged 62, leaving a s. and h., Ferdinando-Dudley-Lea Smith of Hales- owen Grange, b. 15 June 1834, High Sheriff for co. Worcester 1860. (II) Frances, bap. 12 April 1717 at Halesowen, m. 8 Dec. 1740 at Quatford, Salop, Walter Woodcock of Albrighton, Salop, J.P. for co. Salop, and d., his widow, 9 March 1S00, aged 82. Of her two sons, both d. s.p., and of her Bix daughters only four, Mrs. Smart, Mrs. Wilmot, Mrs. {John) Green, and Mrs. Hughes left issue. (Ill) Mary, m. Joseph Harvey, of Stourbridge, and d. (in child bed) at old Swinford, May 1742. She is said to have had issue, JJr. Harvey of Birminyham, who appears to have left issue. (IV) Catherine, bap. 8 Feb. 1726 at Halesowen ; m. 16 Nov. 1744, at Old Swinford, Thomas Jordan, jun., of Birmingham, gunsmith, by wham she had three daughters, all of whom m. and had issue. She m., secondly, Henry Turner, of Stoicell, near Birmingham, by whom she luxd Daniel Turner, her s. and ft., who (besides 3 sons who all d. s.p.) left 7 daughters, of whom (1) Catherine, the eldest ( b. 13 July 1775), m., in 1S02, Oeorge Jones of Broseley, Salop, and d. 1S58, leaving John Jones, her s. and ft., b. 2 April 1S05, who d. 8 Oct. 1882, leaving issue (2), Phcebe, the Gth d. (b. 23 March 1700), m. John Barter and had issue. (V) Elizabeth, bap. 23 Feb. 1728 atKingswinford and m. there 14 July 1759, Bev. Benjamin Briscoe, Rector of Staunton, co. Worcester. Her only Burv. issue was the Rev. William Lea Briscoe, D.C.L., Vicar of Ashton Keynes, Wilts, who d. s.p. 25 Aug. 1834, aged 74. The part of this note marked in italics is ex-inform, of Henry F. J. Vaughan as derived from tho papers of the Rev. Thomas Hughes above mentioned ; the rest is from Mr. Grazebrook's valuable work. ( c ) By this will he strictly entailed the whole of his estate (that of Halesowen) on the heirs of his eldest sister, Ann Smith, doubtless contemplating an early termina- tion of the abeyance of tho Barony in favour of her heir, and being desirous of ciulovi- ing the title. The will gave offence, naturally, to the other sisters and coheirs, who unsuccessfully disputed it as made under undue influence. •Y
