He, on the death of his cousin in 1827, assumed the title of Lord Duffus and claimed to vote as such at the election of Scotch l'ecra in 1830 as heir male of the body of the grantee. In June 1S38 both he and the heir general petitioned (directly) the house of Lords as to their respective right to this Peerage, but no further proceedings were taken. He m. 10 Dec. 1784, at Big- house, Janet, da. of George Mackat, of Bighouse, afsd. He d. Feb. 1843, aged 82. His widow d. at Heinpriggs Castle 15 March 1857, aged 89. VI. 184-3, 6. Sir Georgu-SutherlandDunbar, 4th Bart. [S. to 1706] 2d but 1st surv. s. and h., 6. 6 Jany. 1799. He never 1875. assumed the title of LORD DUFFUS [S.] thu' in June 1S38 he petitioned for that dignity. He d. num. 28 Aug. 1875, at Ackergill Tower, near Wick, co. Caithness, when the Baronetcy [S.] became extinct. [ S - 1488 h s ' and h - of Jo,m Crichton of Byhill, by his 1st wife Mary, da. of Sir John Carmichael (which John Crichton was 2d s. of Robert, the 2d Lord) sue, to that title 29 June 1612, on the death of his cousin Robert, the 6th Lord (who was hanged for murder) to whom he was served heir 15 July 1619 ; was by patent dat. at Newmarket 2 Feb. 1622, cr. LORD OF SANQUHAR and VISCOUNT OF AIR [S.] and was by a subsequent patent dat. at Dunglass 12 June 1633, cr. LORD CRICHTON OF SANQUHAR AND CUMNOCK, VISCOUNT OF AIR and EARL OF DUMFRIES with a spec. rem. (as to this last creation) to heirs male bearing name and arms of Crichton. He m. Euphemia, da. of James Seton, of Touch. He d. in or before 1659. Admon. 12 Feb. 1658/9. II. 1659 1 2. William (Crichton), Earl of Dumfries, &c. [S.], 1st s. and h. He was P.C. to Charles H. He resigned his honours to the Crown 10 Sep. and obtained a new grant [with the former precedency] of tho same, 3 Nov. 1690, with rem. to his grandson and h. ap. William, Lord Crichton, in tail male, rem. to tho four daughters of his deed, son Charles, Lord Crichton, and to the heirs of their bodies respectively succeeding to the family estates, rem. to the nearest heirs of the said Charles, Lord Crichton.
