William (Dalrymple-Crichton) Earl op Dumfries &c. [S.], 1st s. and h. He served 26 years, 1721-47, in the Army, being aide-de-camp to his uncle the Earl of Stair [S.] at the battle of Dettingen, 26 Juno 1743. On the abolition of heritable jurisdictions in 1747 ho got £2,400 (in full of his claim of £17,000) for the Sheriffship of Clackmannan, &c. ; K.T., 1752. By the death of his yr. br., 13 Nov. 1760, he sue. him as 4th EARL OF STAIR, &c. Ayr. Funeral entry in Lyon office. He m. secondly, 19 June 1762, Anne, da. of William Doff, of Crombie, Advocate, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir Robert Dalryhfle, of North Berwick. The Earl of Dumfries and Stair d. s.p.s., 27 July 1768, at Dumfries house in Ayrshire, when the Earldom of Stair, and the titles [S.] he had inherited therewith, devolved on his cousin and h. male. See that dignity. His widow m., 26 July 1769, at Edinburgh, Hon Alexander Gordon, one of the Lords of Session [S.] 1788-92, under the style of Lord Hockvillc {Jioekvillc being his estate in co. Haddington), who rf. 13 March 1792 in his 53rd year. [William Crichton, styled Lord Crichton, only s. and h. ap. by 1st wife, b. 12 Dec. 1734. He d. v. p. in his 10th year, at school at Marylebone, Midx., 9 Sep. 1744.] VI. 17GS. G. Patrick (Macdowall-Crichton), Earl op Dum- fries, &c. [S.], nephew and h. of line, being s. and h. of John Mac- dowall( ;1 ) of Freugh, co. Wigton, by Elizabeth, eldest sister of William, the late Earl. He was b. 15 Oct. 1726 ; was an officer in the 3rd Foot Guards, 1762. Rep. Peer [S.] 1790-1803. He m., 12 Sep, 1771, Margaret, da. of Ronald Crauford, of Restalrig, co. Edinburgh. She d. in Upper Grosvenor street, Midx., 5 May, 1799. He d., s.p.m., 7 April 1803, in his 77th year, in Charlotte sq., Edinburgh. VII. 1803. 7. John (Stuart, afterwards Crichton-Stuaet), Earl of Dumfries [1633], Viscount Air [1622 and 1633], Lord Crichton of Sanquhar [1488], Lord Sanquhar [1622] and Lord Crichton of Sanquhar and Cumnock [1633], all in the peerage of Scotland, grandson and h. of line, being s. and h. of John Stuart, styled Viscount Mount-Stuart, by Elizabeth-Penelope, only surv. da, of Patrick, last Earl of Dumfries, &c. [S.], and Margaret, his wife next above- named, which Elizabeth 4. v.p. 25 July 1797, in her 25th year. He was b. 10 Aug. 1793 and by royal lie, 26 Aug. 1805, took the name of Crichton before that of Stuart. By the death of his paternal grandfather, 16 Nov. 1814, he sue. as 2nd MARQUESS . OF BUTE, &c.
