He d. s.p.m., and under age, 2 Aug. 1418, when the Barony of Dare;/ ( 1 332), and the B.rony of MeiniU (1336), both fell into abeyance between his two daughters and coheirs,( b ) and still so continue. York (which William, was grandson and h. of John Darcy, 2d son of John, Lord T 1500 Darcy [1398-1411], abovenamed, and eventually [1418] the heir male ' of that family), was a person of considerable distinction iu the reign ,*!L of Hen. VII. Gov. of Bamburgh Castle ; Warden of the Scotch 153b. Marshes, Sec. From 17 Oct. (1509), 1 Hen. VIII, to 3 Nov. (1529), 21 Hen. VIII, he was sum. to Pari, as a Baron (LOUD DARCY DE DARCY), by writs directed " Thomcc Darcy dc Darct/ Chl'r ; while on 5 Jany. (1533/4), 25 Hen. VIII, the writ was "de Temple Hirst" (LORD DARCY DE TEMPLE HIRST), and on 8 June (1536), 2S Hen. VIII (simplv), Tlwmce Darcicc CH'r" (LORD DAKCY). He was el. KG. IS and inst. 21 May 1509 5 P.C. and in great favour with the King, subscribing the letter to the Pope, praying for the King's divorce, &c, but was against the dissolution of the monasteries, and, finally joined in Aak'B rebellion, called the Pilgrimage of Grace. He m. firstly, Dowsabel, da. and h. of Sir Richard Tempest, of Ridlesdale, co. Northumberland. He m. secondly, Edith, widow of Ralph Neyill, styled Lord Nevill, sister of William, 1st Lord Sai>dys, da. of Sir William SakDYs of the Vine, Hants, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir John Cheney, of Shurland. She d. at Stepney, 22 Aug. 1529, s.p.m., and was bur. at the Friars Minors, Greenwich. He was convicted of high treason on the charge of delivering up Pontefract Castle to the rebels, and was executed on Tower Hill, 20 June 1538, when, having been attainted all his honours became forfeited. He was bur. in the Church of St. Botolphs, Aldgate, (as was, in 1561, his yr. Bon Sir Arthur Darcy) under a costly monument. DARCY, DARCY DE DARCY, or DARCY AND MEINILL. Sometimes {erroneously) called Darcy of Aston. Barony in 1. Sir George Darcy, s. and h. of Thomas, Lord tail male. Darcy-, next above named,( c ) by his 1st wife, Dowsabel, da. and h. t f tec o of Sir Richard Tempest, of Ridlesdale, co. Northumberland, was 1. 1545. Knighted at the battle of Flodden, 9 Sep. 1513 and was, ten years after his father's death, restored in blood by Act of Pari. (1548) 2 Ed. Sir James Strangways, the younger, and had issue (eight sons and four daughters), as set out in Coll. Top. el Gen., vol. viii, p. 162 ; and (2), Margery, 6. 1 Sep. 1418, and bap. at Kirkby on the Hill, who m. Sir John Conyers, and was represented by John, Lord Conyers, who d- s.p.m in 1557, leaving Elizabeth, his da. and coheir (whose issue, in 1644, became sole heir), wife of Thomas Darcy, whose s. and h., Conyers Darcy. was a: in 1641 Baron Conyere and Baron Darcy.
