[S.], grandson and h., being 2d but only surv. s. and h. of John Montgomerie, Master of Eglintoun, and Elizabeth, his wife, both abovenamed. He m. before Feb. 1 530/1 (by dispensation) his third cousin Mariota (whose marriage with the Master of Borthwick had been annulled at the same date), da. of George (Setok), 3d LoiiD Seton [S.], by Janet, da. of Patrick (Hepburn), 1st Earl op Bothwell [S]. He d. 3 Sep. 1516, at Monkredding, near Kilwinning, and was bur. in the Monastery there. His widow was living 1548. III. 1546. 3. Hugh (Montgomerie), Earl of Eglintoun, Sec. [S.], s. and h. under age in 1516. He fought on the side of Queen Mary, at Langside, 13 May 1568, but submitted to James VI fSJ, in April 1571, and gat in the pari, of Sep. 1571. He m. firstly (contract 13 Feb. 1554/5, fulfilling a previous one of Oct. 1545 stipulating that the Lady should have 4000 marks), Jean, yst. da. of James (Hamilton), Earl of AhRan [S.], Eegent of Scotland, by Margaret, da. of James (DoroLAS), Eabl of Morton [S]. This marriage, of which there was no iBsue was dissolved in 15G2, the parties being within the fourth degree of consan- guiuity.( a ) He m. secondly Agnes, widow of Sir Hugh Campbell, da. and coheir of Sir John Drdmmond, of Innerpeffrcy, by Lady Margaret Stewart, illegit. da of King James IV. [S]. He d. 3 June 15S5. His widow m. in 1588, Patrick (Drummond), 3d Lord Drummond [S.], and d. 1589. IV. 1585. 4. Hugh (Montgomerie), Earl of Eglintoun, &c. [S.], s. and h. He m. (contract, May 1576). Egidia, 1st da. of Robert Boyd), 4th Lord Boyd [S.], by Margaret, da. of Sir John Colquhoun. He was assassinated by his rivals, of the house of Cunningham, being shot (within a year of his succession) while riding, near Stirling, 18 April 1586. ( b ) V. 1586. 5. Huon (Montgomerie), Earl of Eglintoun, &c. [S.], only s. and h. an infant at his father's death ; was in great favour with the king, who arranged a marriage (contract April 1598) between him and the Lndy Gabriela Stewart, sister to the Duke op Lennox [S.J. which, however, probably owing to her death, never took place. He had a grant, of the abbey lands of Kilwinning, erected into a Lordship, 5 Jan. 1603/4. Ho m. his cousin, Margaret ( a ) The lady d. in 1596. Mon. at Holyroodhouse.
