He m. firstly, Jan. 1658, in London, Elizabeth, 1st da. of 'William Crichton, Eaul of Dumfries [S.], by Penelope, da. of Sir Robert Swift. He m. secondly, Grace, widow of Sir Thomas Wentworth, 1st Bart, (who d. 5 Dec. 1675), dm and h. of Francis PorELEY, of Wooley Moorhouse. He m. thirdly, 6 Dec. 1698 (Lie. Dean and Ch. of Westin.), at St. Brides, London,( a ) Catherine (said at that date to be aged 90 !), widow of Henry Sandys, of Down, co. Kent (relict of Sir John Kaye, Bart, and formerly of Michael Wentworth), da. of Sir William St. Qotnttn, 1st- Bart, by Mary da. and coheir of John Lacy. This much-married lady was bur. 6 Aug. 1700, at Down, co. Kent with her third husband. Heracknon. 4 Feb. 1700/1. The Earl d. in London, 1701, and was bur. at Kilwilliug. IX. 1701. 9. Alexander (Montgomerie), Earl op Eglintoun &c. [S.], s. and h., by 1st wife, b. about 1660. P.C. to William HI. and to Queen Anne. Rep. Peer [S.J, 1710-22; taking an active part against the rising of 1/15. He m. firstly (contract. Dec. 1676), Margaret, sister of John, 2d Earl op Dundonald [S.], 1st da. of William Cochrane, styled Lord Cochrane, by Catharine da. of John (Kennedy), Earl of Cassii.lis [S.] By her he had six children. He m. secondly, Anne, 1st da. of George (Gordon), 1st Earl of Aberdeen [S.], by Anne, da. of George Lockhart. She d. s.p.m. and was bur. 16 Dec. 1708. Fun. entry at Lyon office. He m. thirdly, Susanna, da. of Sir Archibald Kennedy, 1st Bart. [8.J, of Culzean, by Elizabeth da. of David (Leslie), 1st Lord Newark [S]. He d. 18 Feb. 1729. Fun. entry at Lyon office. His widow, who survived him 51 years d. 18 March 1780, in her 91st year, at Auchans, co. Ayr. [Hugh Montgomerie, Master of Montgomerie, s. and h. ap., by 1st wife, d. v.p. and unm. at the Univ. of Glasgow, 1696]. XI. 1769. 11. Archibald (Montgomerie), Earl of Eglintoun, &c. [3.1 next and yst. br. and h., b. 18 May 1726. He raised the 77th Reg. of Foot which he commanded in America in 1757, becoming finally, 1793, General in the Army and Col. of the Scots Greys, 1795 ; M.P. for co. Ayr, 1761-68 ; (») The marriage k there recorded aB that of " Alexander, Earl of Eglinton, Viscount Montgomery, Baron of Ardrosson and Killwinning, Widr., and Dame Katherine Kaye, widow." So also (in Latin) in the licence. ( b ) It is bolieved that the claim of William Stephen Fulton to the Earldom of Eglintoun is based on a claim that he was the great-great-grandBon of this James Mont- gomerie in the male line. (°) Under the act for abolishing heritable jurisdictions in 1748 he got £7,S00 (in full of his claim of £12,000) for the Sheriffship of Renfrew and the regalities of Kilwinning and Cunningham. ( d ) A very full account is given in " Wood's Douglas." The murderer escaped execution, by hanging himself, 28 Feb. 1770.
