He m. secondly, 9 Aug. 1783, at St. Marylebone, Midx., Frances,( b ) da. of Sir William Twisden, 6th Bart, (of Roydon), by Mary, da. of George Jervzs. Ayr, by Lilias, 1st da. and coheir of Sir Robert Montgomery, 3d Bart [S.], of Skelmorly, which Alexander (who d. 28 Dec. 1783), was only e. and h. of Hugh If., 2d but 1st surv. 8. of Col. the Hon. James Montgomerie (both of Coylsfield afsd.), which James was 4th s. of Alexander, the 6th Earl by his first wife. He was It. 5 Nov. 1739 ; entered the army, 1756, serving in the American war ; Lieut. Col. of the Glasgow Hegiment (reduced 179. r >) and Lieut. Gov. of Edinburgh Castle. M.P. for co. Avr, 1780-81, 17S4-89, and 1796 ; Inspector of Military Roads in Scotland, 17S& ; Lord Lieut, of co. Ayr. Rbp. Peer [S.], 1798-1806. He was, on 21 Feb. 1806, er. BARON ARDROSSAN of Ardrossan, co. Ayr [U.K.] K.T., 22 May 1812. He m. (contract 3 June 1772), his cousin, Eleanor, 1th da. of Robert Hamilton, of Bourtreehill, co. Ayr, by Ann,( c ) da. and coheir of William Cunningham, of Brown- hill. She d. Feb. 1817 aged 74. He d. 14 Dec. 1819, at Eglintoun Castle aged 80. Adinon. Sep. 1814. His widow, who was b. 5 March 17S7, m. (as his first wife) 30 Jany. 1815, Sir Charles Montolieu Lamb, 2d Bart., who d, 24 March 1S60, aged 74. She d. 12 June 1848, in Clifford street, Midx., aged 61.] XIII. 1819. 13. Archibald "William (Montgomerie), Earl op Eglintoun, &c. [S.], also Baron Ardrossan, grandson and h., being only s. and h. of Archibald Montgomerie, styled Lord Montgomerie and Mary his wife above-named. He was 6. 29 Sep. 1S12, at Palermo. In 1839 he held a magnificent "tournament" (carried out in the ancient style) at Eglinton Castle ; (°) Lord Lieut, of co. Ayr, 1842 ; Lord Lieut, of Ireland, Feb. 1852 to Jan. 1853, and again Feb, 1S5S to July 1859 ; P.C., 1S52 ; cr. D.C.L. of Oxford, 7 June 1853; K.T., 18 Juno 1853. He was also, in 1852, Lord Rector of Marshal Coll., Aberdeen, and of the Univ. of Glasgow. Having been served, 22 Dec. 1840, heirmale gen. of George (Seton), 4th Earl of Winton [S.], he(fj was (by that title) cr. 23 June 1859, EARL OF (") In the Annual Register, 1770, is recorded the marriage on 16 Oct. 1770, of " Rt. Hon. the Earl of Eglinton to a da. of Lord Glencairn." ( b ) This lady is said to have m. 29 Nov. 1794, Francis Moore, Under Sec. of War, and to have been mother of Lieut. Gen. Sir William George Moore, K. C.B., who was b. Nov. 1795, and who d. 23 Oct. 1862, aged 66. If these dates are correct she must have been divorced from the Earl, who d. in Oct. 1796. (°) It is not very clear whether this Ann teas the mother of the Countess. See "Northern Notes and Queries," vol. i, p. 183. ( d ) He constructed the harbour of Ardrossan, the Paisley Canal, &e., besides rebuilding the Castle of Eglintoun. (°) In this tournament Lady Seymour (nec Sheridan), afterwards Duchess of Somerset was " the Queen of Beauty." The cost which was expected not to exceed .£2,000 amounted to some £40,000. 0 His ancestor, Alexander Seton (afterwards 6th Earl of Eglintoun) of whom he was the lineal heir male, was next br. to George, 3d Earl of Winton [S.], whose great grandson, the 5th Earl, was attainted in 1716 and whose male line may possibly be now extinct, -'/such is the case the Earl of Eglintoun would on the reversal of the attainder be entitled to the Scotch Earldom of Winton as also, probably, to that of Dunfermline.
