She d. 20 March 1027, aud was bur. at Exton, co. Rutland. M.I. He m. secondly Diana, Dow. Countess ok Oxford, da. of William (Cecil), 2d Earl ok Exeter, by his second wife, Elizabeth, da. of Sir William Duury. By her, who was a great fortune aud a celebrated beauty, he had no issue. She was bur. 3 May 1054, at Mauldeu, Beds. He d. at Ampthill 21 and was bur. 31 Deo. 1663, at Mauklen afsd. in his Oath year. Will pr. 1664. II. 1G63. 2. Robert (Bruce), Earl of Elgin, &c. He d. s.p.m. 10 Feb. 1746/7, when the Earldom of Ailesbury and the honours therewith conferred in 1004 as also the Barony of Bruce of Whorlton (cr. 1041) became extinct, while of his Scottish honours( c ) the Barony of Kinloss (cr. 1602) devolved (dejurt) on his grandson and heir of line,(< 1 ) but the Earldom of Elgin and Barony of Bruce of Kinloss (cr. 1033) devolved on the heir male collateral of the grantee as under. Ciiarles (Bruce), Earl of Elgin [1633], Earl of Kincardine [1047], Lord Bruce(°) of Kinloss [1633], and Lord Bruce of Tohry [1647], all in the peerage of Scotland, cousin and h. male, being heir male collateral of the 1st Earl of Elgin. He was s. and h. of William (Bruce), 8th Earl of Kincardine and Lord Bruce op Torry [S.], by Janet, da. of James Roderton, which Earl William (who d. 8 Sep. 1740) was s. and h. of Thomas, the 7th Earl (d. March 1740), who wasyr. s. of Alexander, the 4th Earl of Kincardine (living 1706), thes. and h. of Robert Bruce of Broomhall, co. Fife (d. 1652) the 3d s. of Sir George Bruce (d. 1625) the next yr. br. to Sir Edward Bruce, 1st Lord Kinloss [S.], who was father of Thomas, 1st Earl of Elgin, aud ancestor of the 2d, 3d aud 4th Earls of Elgin. He was b. 20 July 1732, site his father in the Kincardine peerage in 1740 and sue. his kinsman in the Elgin peerage in 1747 as afsd. Hefli. 1 Junel759, at Edin- burgh, Martha, only child of Thomas White, of London, Banker. He d. at Broomhall ( a ) Four Knights were dubbed 20 May 1638, at Windsor with Charles, Prince of Wales, at his installation as Knight of the Garter. These were (1) Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex (2) Ulick de Burgh, Earl of St. Albans (3) Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin, and (4) William Villiers, Viscount Graudison. ( b ) "Creations, 1483-1646," in ap. 47th Rep. D.K. Pub. Records. ( c ) It would seem that besides the Barony of Kinloss cr. [to heirs general] in 1602 [allowed to such heir 1868] and the Barony of Bruce of Kiuloss cr. [together with the Earldom of Elgin to heirs male] in 1633) that he possessed also two Baronies of " Bruce of Kiuloss," the one conferred in 1604 [to heirs male] aud the other in 1608 [to heirs general] on the 1st Lord Kinlos3. The devolution of the latter Barony (1608) ought, apparently, to follow that of " Kinloss," while that of the former one (1604) ought, apparently, to follow that of the creation of 1033. Inasmuch, however, as neither of these dignities have ever been so assumed they aro treated of, in this work, .as having become dormint since the death in 1747 of the Earl of Ailesbury who was both heir male aud heir general of Lord Kinloss the grantee. (•') To the heir of line this Barony of Kinloss was, in 1808, allowed. (°) As to his possible right to have inherited in 1747 the Barony of Bruce of Kinloss [S.], cr. in 1604 ; see note " c " above.
