He was on a spec, mission to the Emperor Leopold, 1790 ; Minister at Brussels, 1792 ; at Berlin 1795, and Ambassador at Constantinople, 1799 — 1803, during which period he arranged for the removal from Athens to England of the sculptured stones( b ) of the Parthenon ; P.C., 1799 ; Knight of the Crescent of Turkey, 1S01. He was also President of the Scotch Antiquaries, Gen. of the Royal Archers [S.], &c. He m. firstly, 11 March 1799, at Archerfield, Mary, only child of William Hamilton Nisbet, of Dirleton and Belhaveu, co. Haddington. Fife, Elizabeth, yst. da. of James Townsend Oswald, of Duunikeir afsd., Auditor of the Exchequer [S.], by Janet da. of ( — ) Gray, of Skibo, co. Sutherland. He d. in Paris, 14 Nov. 1841, aged 75. Fife, 1854 ; cr.D.CL. of Oxford, 4 June 1856 ; P.O., 1857 | G.C.B. (civil, extra), 1858. Plenipo. to China, 1857-59, and again 1860-61, his mission ending in the capture of Pekin. Postmaster Gen., 1859. Gov. Gen. of India, Jany. 1862 till his death late in the next year. Ho m. firstly, 22 April 1841, at Kinnaird House, co. Stirling, Elizabeth Mary, only child of Charles-Lennox Ccmming-Bruce, of Roseisle, co. Stirling. She d. s.p.m. 7 July 1843, in Jamaica. He m. secondly, 7 Nov. 1846, at St. Peter's, Eaton square, Mary Louisa, da. of John George (Lasibton), 1st Earl of Durham, by his second wife, Louisa Elizabeth, da. of Charles (Grey), 2d Earl Grey. He d. somewhat suddenly 20 Nov. 1863, aged 52, at Dharmsala in India and was bur. privately the next day. His widow who was 6. 8 May 1819, and was O.T., living 1890. ( a ) Inscription given in full in Wood's " Douglas " where there is a long and most favourable character of him. ( b ) It was as late as 1812 that the last cargo of these, usually known as " the Elgin marbles," arrived in England, and in July 1816 they were purchased by the nation for £35,000 and deposited in the British Museum. It is said that they had cost the Earl no less than £74,000. There was, however a considerable outcry against their removal, as set forth (somewhat Btrongly) in Byron's " Curse of Minerva."
