Enniskillen Militia Fusileers. He m- 12 July 1869, at St. Peter's Eaton Sq., Midx., Chiirlotte Marion, da. and coheir of Douglas Baird, of Closeburn, co. Dumfries, by Charlotte, da. of Henry Acton, Capt. 12th Lancers. [John-Henry-Michael Cole, styled Viscount Cole, 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. ap., 6. 10 Sep. 1876.] Family Estates.— These, in 1883, consisted of 29,635 acres in co. Fermanagh, besides 569 in Wilts. Total 30,204 acre3, worth £19,290 a year. Principal Residence. Florence Court, Enniskillen. (*) It is a curious fact that when Scotch or Irish Peers receive a peerage of the United Kingdom they generally (happily not always) prefer any title (often one entirely unknown and in some cases one most uncouth) to the title by which they and their ancestors have been known. Thus the Earl of Limerick and the Earl of Erne tho' both of them representative Peers of Ireland and known both in and out of the House of Lords only by suck title chose (instead of a Barony of their own name) the one to be Baron "Foxford of Stackpole Court, co. Clare," and the other Baron " Fermanagh of Linaskea, co. Fermauagh." Thus, also, for instance, in 1880, instead of there being in the House of Lords a Lord Courtown, Aboyne, Glasgow, Kinnaird, Enniskillen, Limerick, Erne, Couyngham, Clanricarde, Crawford, Headfort, Meath, Gosford, Stair, Fife, Seafield, Dunraveu, Rollo, Southesk, and Caithness, the peerages [U.K.] selected by the Scotch aud Irish Peers so named (as if on purpose to puzzle the uninitiated and to escape from their own identity) are Saltersford, Meldrum, Ross, Kossie, Grinstead, Foxford, Fermauagh, Minster, Somerliill, Wigau, Kenlis, Chaworth, Worlingham, Oxeufoord, Skene, Stratspey, Kenry, Dunning, and [speak softly !J Balinhard, and Bairogill. ( b ) "King William's trunk, mustard pot, and spurs," are bequeathed therein as heirlooms.
