She was 4. 5 Aug. 1849. [Henry-William Criciiton, b. 30 Sop. 1872, styled Viscount Crichton from 1885 ; ed. at Eton.] Family Estates. — These, in 18S3, consisted of 31,389 acres(') in co. Fermanagh, 4,826 co. Donegal, 2,184 co. Mayo, and 1,966 co. Sligo. Total 40,365 acres valued at £23,850 a year. Principal Residence. Crom Castlo, near Newtown llutler, co. Fermanagh. ERRIS OF BOYLE. He m., before 17 March 1449/50, Beatrix, sihter of James, 1st Eahl ok Morton [S.], da. of James (Douglas), Lord Dalkkith [S.] by his 1st wife, Margaret, da. of James (Douglas), Earl Douolas |S.] He d. about 1460. His widow was living 25 Nov. 1482. II. HGO 1 ! 2. Nicholas (Hay), Earl of Erroll, and Hereditary Constable [S.], s. and h., under ago at his father's death. He m. before 31 Jany. 1466/7, Elizabeth, da. of Alexander (Seton, alias Gordon), 1st Earl of Huntly [S.], by his third wife, Elizabeth, da. of William (Cuichton), Lord Crichton [S.] He d. B.p. 1470. His widow m. before 12 July 1471, as his 2d wife, John (Kennedy), 2d Lord Kennedy [S.J, who d. 1508. III. 1470. 3. William (Hat), Earl of Erroll, &c. [S.], br. and h. P. C. to King James III. [S.] ; Commissioner to treat of pence with England, 1427. He m- firstly, Isabel, da. of George (Gordon), 2d Earl ok Hdntly [S.], by his first wife, Lady Annabella Steward, da. of King James 1. [S.] Hero, secondly, before 25 March 1501, Elizabeth, da. of George (Leslie), 1st Earl of Rothes [S.] by his second wife, Christian, da. of Walter (Halyuurton), 1st Lord Dirletoun [S.] She was living 1503, but d. s.p.m. He m. thirdly Margaret, widow of Sir James Sandilands, da. of Andrew Ker, of Auldtounburn. He d. 1506. His widow living 17 May 1509. (") The Earl of Enniskillen has just about the same quantity of acres (30,000) in co. Fermanagh, as Lord Erne, tho' kit are worth nearly £19,000 while those of Lord Erne (who in 1876 was cr. Baron Fermanagh) are estimated at £17,039 a year. ( b ) He was the last commoner raised to the peerage of Ireland on the eve of the Union. See vol. i, p. 166, note " a," tub " Ashtown." ( c ) The important office of Constable (together with the lands of Slains, co. Aberdeen), had been conferred 12 Nov. 1314, by King Robert I. [S.] on Sir Gilbert Hay, of Erroll, the great grandfather of Sir William Hay above-named, who was grand- father of the first Earl. It was probably in right of this high office thf.t the precedency of this Earldom was allowed at the decreet of ranking in 1606, above that of several Earldoms of more ancient creation and inferior only to three, viz., Angus, Argyll (which last was also so ranked from, apparently, the same [i.e., official] cause) and Crawford, whose date of creation waB as early as 1398.
