ERROIX. 271 IV. 150G. 4. William (Hay), Earl op Erroll, &c. [S.], s. and h. by first wife, served heir to his father 21 Sep. 1507. He had agrant of the Sheriffdom of Aberdeen, 10 Feb. 1510/1, He m. Elizabeth, yst. da, of William (Uithven), 1st Loud Rithvo [S.], by his second wife, Christian, da. of John (Fordes) 2d Loud Fouhes [S.] He was slain at the battle of Flodden, 9 Sep. 1513. His widow m. as his second wife, before 9 Dec. 1529 (when she was living), Ninian (Ross), Loud ltoss of Halkhf.ad [S.J, who was living 30 June 1534. V. 1513. 5. William (Hay), Earl of Erroll, &c. [S.], only s. and h. Ho was P.O. to King James V. [S.] ; was a commissioner sent to France 1515, and to England 1516. He m. before 1520, Helen, da. of John (Stkwaut), 3rd Eaul of Lennox [S.], by Ann, da. of John (Stewart), Earl of Atholk [S.] He was living 21 Oct. 1530, about which date he appears to have effected a settlement of the Earldom and Constableship to heirs male, ami probably d soon afterwards. His widow m. as his second wife, John (Gordon), Eaul of Suther- land [S.], who d. July 1567, and d. 1563-65. VI. 1535? 6. William (Hay), Earl of Erroll, &c. [S.], only s. and h. who, on the resignation of his father, Earl William, 21 Oct. 1530, had charters of certain lands. He d. s.p. 11 April 1541, aged S0.( :L ) VII. 1541. 7. George (Hay), Earl of Erroll, and Hereditary Constable [S.], cousin and h. male, being s. and h. of Thomas Hay, of Logy Almond, co. Perth, by Margaret Logy, heiress of Logy Almond afsd., which Thomas was 2d s. of William, the 3d Earl. Tho' kept out of possession some seven months his claim appears to have been acknowledged by charter 13 Dec. 1541, whereiu the dignities were limited to him and his heirs male. He IB., firstly, before 25 Oct. 1512, Margaret, da. of Alexander Robertson, of Strowau, by Isabel, da. of John (Stewart), Earl of Athole [S.J He m. secondly, before 3 Dec. 1571. Helen, da, of Walter Bruce, of Pitcullen, co. Perth. She was living 6 March 1571/2. He was alive 1574 but probably d. soon afterwards. VIII. 1575? 8. Andrew (Hay), Earl of Erroll, ftc. [S.], 1st s. and h., by first wife. He m. firstly his cousin, Jean,(") sister and heir of line of William (Hay), 6th Earl of Euuoll, abovenamed. Hem. secondly Agnes, da. of George (Sinclair), Earl of Caithness [S.], by Elizabeth, da. of William (Graham), 2d Eaul of Montrose [S.] He d, 1585. [Alexander Hay-, Master of Erroll, uti/lecl Lord Hay, s. and h. ap. by first wife, survived his father but was set aside by act of Pari, from succeeding to the Earldom and Coustubleship on ground of his insanity.] IX. 1585. 9. Francis (Hay), Earl of Erroll, &c [S.], 2d s. by first wife and heir by act of Pari, as above mentioned. He, with some other Scotch Earls (Crawford, Huutly, and Bothwell), treasonably espoused the interest of Spain as early as 1588, giving a defeat to the Royal army 3 Oct 1594. The Earl was, however, pardoned in 1596 and was in 1604 one of the Pari. Com- missioners for treating of a union with England. He m. firstly Anne, da. of John (Stewart), 4th Eaul ok Athole [S.], by his second wife, Margaret, da. of Malcolm (Fleming), Lord Fleming [S.] She </. s.p. He m. secondly, Margaret, da. of James (Stewart), Earl of Moray [S.] (the " Good Regent"), by Ann, da. of William (Keith), Eaul Marischal [S.] She, too, d. B.p. He m. thirdly, before 10 Aug. 1600, Elizabeth, yst. da. of William (Douglas), 6th Earl of Morton [S.], by Agnes, da. of George (Leslie), Earl of Rothes [S.] He d. 16 July 1631, at Slains, co. Aberdeen, and was privately bur. there. ( a ) Jean, only sister of the 6th Earl, was his heir and the heir of line to the former i'arh. She m. her cousin Andrew (Hay) Earl of Erroll, and their posterity continued the line till 1671, when the dignities passed to the heir male, a descendant of Earl Andrew by his second wife, tho' the descendants (thro' the female line) of the said Jean still continued.
