ESSEX. 287 XXI. 1661. 1. Arthur (Capell), Baron Capell op Hadham, was, on 20 April 1661, cr. VISCOUNT MALDEN, co. Essex, and KARL OF ESSEX.( ft ) He was 1st s. and h. of Arthur, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham, by Elizabeth, da. and h. of Sir Charles Morrison, Bart., of Cashiobury Park, Herts ; was bap. 28 Jan. 1631/2, at Hadham parva, Herts ; sue. his father (who was beheaded in the Royd cause) 9 March 1648/9 ;( b ) Lord Lieut, of Herts, 1660-81, and, shortly after the restoration, was cr. an Earl and Viscount as above stated( a ) with a spec. rem. to the heirs male of the body of his father, for whose fidelity the honours were conferred ; Lord Lieut, of Wilts, 1668-75 ; was sent in 1659, as Ambassador to Copenhagen; P.C. 1672. From 1672 to 1677, he was Lord Liedt. ok Ireland and from March to Nov. 1679, First Lord of the Treasury. Being a partisan of the Duke of Monmouth, he was imprisoned for complicity in the Rye House plot, in the Tower of London, where he was found, with his throat cut, 13 July 1683, and was bur. the 18th in St. Peters ad Vincula(°) aged 52. Will pr. 16S4. He m. 19 May 1653, at Petworth, Sussex, Elizabeth, 5th da. of Algernon (Percy), 10th Earl op Northum- berland, by his first wife, Ann. da. of William (Cecil), 2d Earl of Salisbury. She who was 6. 1 Dec. 1636, d. 5 Feb. 1717/3, aged 81, and was bur. at Watford, Herts. Willpr. April 1718. XXII. 1683. 2. Algernon (Capell), Earl of Essex, &c, 5th but 1st surv. s. and h., b. 28 Dec. 1670, and bap. 3 Jany. 1670/1, at Watford ; styltd Viscount Malden till 1683. He was Gent, of the Bedchamber to King William III. with whom he served in all his campaigns, being Col. of the 4th Dragoons in 1693, and becoming Lieut. Gen. in the army in 1707; Lord Lieut, of Herts, 1692 ; Constable of the Tower of London, &c, 1707 ; P.C, 1708. He m. 28 Feb. 1691/2, Mary, 1st da. of William (Bentinck), 1st Eaul of Portland, by his first wife, Anne, da. of Sir Edward Viluers. He d. 10 Jany. 1709/10, in his 40th year and was bur. 19th at Watford.('>) Will pr. June 1710. His widow m. in 1714 (as his first wife) Sir Couyers Darcy, K.B. (who d. s.p. 1 Dec. 1758), and d. 20 Aug. 1720, being bur. the 29th at Watford afsd. XXIII. 1710. 3. William (Capell), Earl of Essex, etc., only s. and h., 6. 1697 ; styled Viscount Maldkn till 1710 ; took his seat 11 Nov. 1718 ; Gent, of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales, Feb. 171S/9 to 1727 and to the king, 1727 ; Lord Lieut, of Herts, 1722 ; K.T., 2 Feb. 1725, till 1738, when he resigned it for the Garter ;( c ) Keeper of Hyde Park, 1728-29; cr. LL.D. of Cambridge, 25 April 172S; Envoy, 1731-32, and afterwards, 1732-37, Ambassador to Turin; P.C, 1735; K.G., 20 Feb. 1737/8, being installed 15 June following. Capt. of the Yeomen of the Guard, 1739 ; Kanger of St. James' Park, &c. Hem. firstly 27 Nov. 1718, at Petersham, Surrey, Jane, 3d da. of Henry (Hyde), 4th Earl of Clarendon, by Jane, da. of Sir William Leveson-Gower. Slie, who was a lady of the Bedchamber to the Princess of Wales, d. s.p.m. in Paris of a fever and was bur. 30 Jany. 1723/4, at Watford.0 He m. secondly 3 Feb. 1725/6, Elizabeth, yst. da. of Wriothesley (Russell), 2d Duke of Bedford, by Elizabeth, da. and h. of John Howland. He d. 8 and was bur. 17 Jany. 1742/3, at Watford. Will pr. 1743. His widow d. 8 and was bur. 14 June 1784, at Watford. Her will pr. June 1784. ( b ) His estates were compounded for to the Sequestrators during the commonwealth at the sum of £4,706. ( c ) The entry of his burial says "cutt his own throat with a knife," and such probably, tho' by no means certainly, was the fact. " Is a good companion ; loves the interest of his country ; hath no genius for business ; nor will ever apply himself that way ; is a well bred gentleman ; brown complexioned and well shaped, but his mouth is always open."
