(but probably legitimated) da. of John I., King of Portugal, by Donna Agnes Pure;;. She d. s.p. at Bordeaux, 23 Oct. 1439, and was bur. at Arundel. M.I. He m. thirdly Ann, widow of Sir John Fitz-Lewis, relict formerly of Sir Richard Hankforo, da. of John (Montacute), 3rd Eahl of Salismjry, by Maud, da. of Sir Adam Francis. He d. 5th Aug. 14 47, and was bur. at St. Katharines nfsd. ; Admon. at Lambeth, 13 Dec. 1447 ; Will pr. 16 Feb. 1447/8.(«) His widow was bur. with him. Her will dated 20 April 1-457 ; admon. 3 Dec. 1157, at Lambeth. 2. Henry (Holand), Duke of Exeter and Earl of IV. 1447 Huntingdon, only s. and h., by 1st wife, b. 27 June 1430 ; Knighted to 15 May 1 140 ; Constable of the Tower of Loudon, 1447. He was a 1-1G1. zealous Lancastrian, fighting at 'Wakefield (1460), and at Towioii (1461), being in consequence attainted 4 Nov. 1461, whereby all kit tumour* became forfeited and be for the next 12 years lived in great penury. He again fought at Barm-t 14 April 1471, being most severely wounded. He d. s.p. (being found dead in the sea between Dover and Calais) in 1473.( d > lie had m. before 30 July 1447, Ann (sister of King Edward IV.), 1st da. of Richard (Plantagenet), Duke of York, by Cicely, da. of Ralph (Nevill), Earl of Westmorland. She who was b. 10 Aug. 1439, at Fotheringay Castle, was divorced from him, at her own suit, 12 Nov. 1472.( u ) Marquessate. Hf.xry (Courtenay), Earl of Devon, about 149S, I 152S who in loll, sue. his father in that Earldom, was, 18 June 1525,(0 £ cr. MARQUESS OF EXETER. (») In Doyle's Official Baronage it said that he was "restored Earl of Hunting- don before April 5 1416." ( b ) The date of the Dukedom of York (conferred on Edmund Plantagenet, 5th son of King Edward III.), was 1385, but the Duke of Exeter was by this warrant placed before the Dukedoms of [I.], Norfolk (Mowbray), cr. 1397 [2], Warwick (Bcachamn), cr. 1145, with precedency before Buckingham, and [3], Buckingham (Stafford) cr. 1444. Seep. 147 note "b" sub. "Dorset" for an earlier instance of precedency, and seo Vol. i. p. 229 note " a," stii. " Banbury," for some account of " precedency of Teers in pari, by royal warrant." Earl of Devon, 3 Sep. 1553, was restored in blood, but not to the honours of his family. He is, however, often (tho' erroneously) considered to have been thereby restored to the Marquessate of Exclcr. See Mr. Horace Round's article in " the Genealogist," new series, vol. iv, p. 124. This Earl of Devon d. unm. 18 Sep. 1056, when, in any case, the Maniuessate became extinct.
