Henry Belasyse, M.P. for the North Hiding of Yorkshire, by Grace, I. 1G89. • da. and coheir of Sir Thomas Babton, of Smithells, co. Lancaster, which Henry, who was s. and h. ap. of the 1st Viscount, d. v.p. 20 May 1647, aged 43. He was bap. 16 March 1627/8, at Coxwold ; and (having m. a da. of the Lord Protector Cromwell) was made in 1657, a Councillor of State and was sum. to Cromwell's" Upper House,"( e ) 10 Dec. 1657. He was, 27 Dec. 1658, sent as Envoy to the King of France. He, however, favoured the restoration ; was Col. of a Keg. of Horse, 1660 ; Lord Lieut., co. Durham, 1660-61 ; (») " No notice of this creation is found on the Kolls of the period. He was sum. to Pari, as Lord Nevill do Fauconbcrg, 13 June 1461. Polydorc Virgil speaks of his Having been created Earl of Kent, at the same time that Henry Bourchier was created Earl of Essex, viz., 30 June 1461. He had a giant of the manor of Crewkerne, 1 Aug. 1462, to him and the heirs male of his body ; and in a subsequent grant of that manor with others to George, Duke of Clarence, he is stated to have died 9 Jan. 1463." [Courthope.] ( b ) The coheirs were the three daughters of the Earl of Kent, viz. (1) Joan who m. Sir Edward Bedhowing [Bechom or Bethune] who d. s.p. (2) Elizabeth m. Sir Richard Strangways whose issue is represented by her granddaughters and coheirs and (3) Alice m. Sir John Conyers by whom she had William, Lord Conyera, her s. and h., who d. 1524 leaving issue. ( c ) He appears to have used for his arms the coat of Nevill (Gu, a saltire, arq. charged [for difference] with a mullet of the held) quarterly with that of Fauconbcrg {A rg., a lion ramp, azure.)
