Louth [I]. He m. in 1683, Arabella, da. of Sir Robert Cotton, 1st Bart., of Combermere, by Uester, da. of Sir Thomas Salisbury, Bart. He d., s.p.m.s., of apoplexy, 3 Nov. 1731, when all his hmourt became extinct. FERKARD, Viscountcy [I.J 1. ATargaretta Amelia, sun jure Baroness Oriel of I 1797 Collon [I.] was, on 22 Nov. 1797, cr. VISCOUNTESS FERRARD, co. Louth [1.] She was 1st da. of Thomas Burgh, of Bert, co. Kildare, by Anne, da. of the Rt. Rev. Dives Downes, Bishop of Cork and Ross. She»i. 14 Dec. 1704, John Foster who (1785-1800) was Speaker [the last person who held that office] of the Irish House of Commons. In consequence of her husband's political services she was, 5 June 1790, cr. BARONESS ORIEL OF COLLON, co. Louth [I.] and was, seven years later, er. a Viscountess as abovestated, with rem. iu each case of the dignity to the heirs male of her body. She d. 20 Jan. 1824. Her husband, the Rt. Hon. John Foster, was cr. 17 July 1821, Baron Oriel of Feiirard, co. Louth. [See that dignity] and d. 16 Aug. 1828, aged 88. evidently made use of here, an the forerunner for the introduction of a similar use to he made of the many subsequent ones, e.g. Clermont in 1806 ; Oxmautown in 1807, Cremorne in 1813, Glandore in 1815, Ac, &c The matter was brought before the House of Lords, 24 July 1855, Lord Fcrmoy's claim to vote at the election of Irish Rep. Peers was refused, a majority of judges (8 out of 10) deciding, 19 May 1S56, that the extinction of the Earldom of Mountrath was not "an extinction of a Peerage of Ireland according to the true construction of the Act of Union." The extinction (12 Feb. 1855) of the Viscountcy of O'Neill was accordingly substituted jur that of Mountrath and another patent, founded thereon, was issued 10 Sep. 1S56, for the creation of the Barony of Fermoy.
