"The Earls of Derby of the family of Ferrers were not unfrenuently styled Earls de Ferrers, eus has been before remarked under Derby ; they were also called Earls of Tutbury, from the Castle of Tutbury, one of the possessions of Henry de Ferrers, mentioned in Domesday. Thomas (Plautagenct), Earl of Lancaster, who was possessed of the Castle of Tutbury (granted to his father by the Crown), styled himself, upon his seal, Earl of Lancaster, Leicester, and.Ferrers ; no such Earldom [of Ferrers] however existed until 1711." Robert (de Ferrers), Lord Ferrers, s. and h., aged 15 at the death of his father. He was never sum. to Pari, as a Baron, but was sum. to a council, 25 Feb. (1311/2), 16 Ed. III. He served in the wars in Scotland and France and was present at the battle of Crecy in 1316. He is said to have ro. Agnes, da, of Humphrey (de Bohdn), Earl of Hereford. He d. (1350), 21 Ed. III. ( a ) The estate of Chartley was the inheritance of his great grandmother, Agnes, Countess of Derby, one of the sisters and coheirs of Randolph (de Blondeville), Earl of Chester. ( b ) It is to be remarked that this Barony is frequently spoken of as " Ferrers dc Chartley," but no such designation is appended to any of the writs. Banks in his " Bar. An'jl." queries the precedency of this Barony prior to the writ of 1 Ed. IV. to " Walter Devereux do Ferrers," inasmuch as there is no proof of the sitting of the Baron sum. by Ed. I. and none of his descendants wore sum. till tho said Walter. The precedency, however, of 1299 was both iu 1077 and 1771 allowed to it.
