He m. secondly, 25 Feb. 1655/6, at St. Paul's, Covent Garden, Mary, da. of Sir William Vilubrs, 1st Bart., of Brookaby, by his first wife, Anne, da. of Sir Edward Griffin. He d, s.p.m.B. 16 April 1677. Admon. 12 May 1677. His widow d. about 1688. Her admon. 13 Oct. 1688. II. 1677. 2. Louis (de Duras), Earl of Feversham [167G], to Viscount Sondes of Lkes Court [1676], Baron Duras ok Holdenby 1709. [1673], and Baron of Thuowlky [1676], also Marquis do Blanqucfort in France, son in law of the above, and heir, according to the spec. rem. in the creation thereof, to the peerage of Feversham, he. He was br. of the Duke de Duras and de Lohok, in France, and yst. b. of Guy Alphonso, Marquis de Duras, by Elizabeth de la Touu DAuvergne. He was b. 1641 ; naturalised Oct 1665, being in that year Capt. of the Duke of York's Horse Guards, of which, in 1667, he was Colonel. He was cr. 29 Jan. 1673, BARON DURAS OF HOLDENBY, co. Northampton, and four years subsequently sue. to the Earldom of Feversham, &c, as above stated, taking his seat, as such, 21 May 1677. He was Lieut. Gen. of the Forces, 1678, and again 1685 ; Master of the Horse to Katharine, the Queen Dow., 1679-80 ; Lord Chamberlain, (1680), and Keeper of her great seal ; K G., 30 July 1685 ; was in command at the battle of Sedgmoor ; and was in command for James II. when the Prince of Orange (William III.) took possession of Whitehall ; Master of St. Katharine's Hospital, 1698, &c. He m. Mary, 1st da. and coheir of George (Sondes), Earl of Feveksham, by Mary, his second wife, both above named. She apparently was dead before July 1701. (°) He d. s.p. 19 April 1709, in his 69th year, and was bur. the 28th in the French chapel, Savoy, Midx., when all his honours became extinct. Anthony Duncombe, of Barford, Wilts, only s. and h. I. 1747 o£ Anth °ny D., by Jane, 1st da. and coheir of the Hon. Frederick to Cornwallis, was b. about 1695, inherited on the death (9 April 1711), , „oo of his uncle, Sir Charles Duncombe, sometime (1708-09) Lord Mayor of London, a moiety of his vast wealth; was M.P. for Salisbury, 1721-34, and for Downton, 1734-47, and was cr. 23 June 1747, LORD FEVERSHAM, BARON OF DOWNTON, co. Wilts. He m. firstly, Margaret, da. of George (Vernet), Lord Willouqhby de Broke, by Margaret, da. of Sir John ( a ) This, of course, is positive proof of the creation of the peerage, but the letters patent have never been enrolled. ( b ) By her he had three sons, viz. (1) Freeman Sondes d. an infant (2) George Sondes, inhumanly murdered by his brother and (3) Freeman SondeB who was hung for his brother's murder. (°) At her death, s.p. the estates and representation of the Sondea family devolved on her only sister Catherine or her descendants, whose husband Lewis (Watson) 3d Baron Rockingham, was, consequently in 1714, cr. Baron of Throwley, Viscount Sondes and Earl of Rockingham, being ancestor (thro' the female line) of the present Barons and Earls Sondes. ( d ) Bishop Burnet's character of him with Swift's addition thereto in italics is as follows. "Came over with one of the Duke of York's family; is a middle statured brown man ; aged BO and upwards. lie m» a very dull old fellow."
