Somerset (who in 1665, sue. his said son as 2d Viscount), by Penelope, da. of Sir William Godolphin, was b. before 1036 ; was groom of the Bedchamber to the Duke of York, 1656, and having faithfully served the Hoyal family during their exile was knighted at Whitehall, 30 May 1C60 ; was M.P. for new Komney 1661-65; Keeper of the Privy Purse, 1662 ; and soon afterwards, 14 July 1663, was a: BARON BERKE- LEY OF RATHDOWNE, co. Wicklow and VISCOUNT FITZ-HARDINGE^) OF BEREHAVEN, co, Kerry [I.], with a spec, rem , failing his issue male, to his father and the heirs male of his father's body. Envoy to Paris, Nov. 1664. On 17 March 1664,00 »o was cr. BARON BOTETOURT( c ) OF LANGPORT, co. Somerset and EARL OF FALMOUTH, but with the ordinary limitation. He m. 18 Dec. 1664, Mary, da. of Harvey Bauot, of Pipe Hall, co. Stafford, by his 1st wife, Dorothy, sister and coheir of Robert, and da. of Sir Henry Arden of the same. He d. s.p.m.( d ) being slain in the naval engagement with the Dutch, 3 June 1665 and was bur. tho 22d in Westm. Abbey. Will dat. 21 April and pr. 29 June 1665. His widow in. (as his first wife) Charles (Sackvillb), 6th Earl of Dorset, who d. 29 Jan. 1705/6. She d. in or before 1679. Admou. 10 May 1679.( c ) On Lord Falmouth's death his English Earldom ard Barony became extinct, while the Irish titles devolved, as under, according to their spec, limitation. II. 1G65. 2. Charles (Berkeley), Viscount Fitz-Hardinge op Berehaven, Sec. [I.], father and (according to the spec. rem. in the patent) heir. He was elder br. of John, 1st Lord Berkeley op Sthatton, being s. and h. of Sir Maurice Berkeley, of Bruton, co. Somerset, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir William Killicirew, of Hanworth, Midx. He was bap. 3 Jan. 1599/1600, at St. Margaret's Lothbury, London ; knighted, at Beaulieu, 26 Aug. 1622, and, having distinguished himself by his loyalty to Charles I., was at the Restora- tion, made Comptroller of the Household, P.C., and afterwards Treasurer of the Household. He m. Penelope, da. of Sir William Gouolphin, of Godolphin, Cornwall, by Thomasine, da. and h. of Thomas Sidney, of Writton, co. Norfolk. He d. at Whitehall, 12 June 1668. Will dat. 1 Dec. 1666, pr. 27 June 1668. His widow d. May 1669. Will, in which she directs to be bur. at Bruton, dat. 22 April and pr. 18 May 1669. III. 1668. 3. Maurice (Berkeley), Viscount Fitz-Hardinge of Berehaven, &c. [I.], s. and h., being elder br. of the 1st Viscount. He had, v.p., on 2 July 1660, been cr. a Baronet, as " of Bruton, co. Somerset." He Ilk, before Dec. 1666, Anne, da. of Sir Heury Lee, 1st Bart., of Quarendou, by Eleanor, da. of Sir Richard Worthy. He d. s.p.m. legit. 13 June 1690, when his Baronetcy became extinct. Will, See., in which be directs to be bur. at Bruton dat. 22 April and 3 May 1690, pr. 27 June following. Hia wife survived him. IV. 1690, 4. John (Berkeley), Viscount Fitz-Hardinge of to Berehaven and Baron Berkeley of Rathdowne [I.], yst. br. and 1712. h. Treasurer of the Chamber and one of the Tellers of the Exchequer to Queen Anne. He m. Barbara, 1st da. of Sir Edward Vilubrs, Knight-Marshal, by his 1st wife, Frances, yst, da. of (») Robert Fit: Hardinge (said to be "a noble Dane ") obtained the Lordship of Berkeley, co. Gloucester from King Henry II., and was ancestor to the race of Berkeley. ( b ) Tlie date assigned in Doyle's Official Baronage is 6 March 1665. ( c ) He was a descendant but' not a representative of the Lords Botetourt, his branch of the family being a cadet of the Bcrkeleys of Stoke Gifford in which line vested the coheirship to that dignity. See vol. i, p. 384, note "c" in the Tabular pedigree, sub " Botetourt." ( d ) His only surv. child, Mary m. 2 May 1681, Gilbert Gerard, afterwards Sir Gilbert Cosiu-Gerard, Bart., from whom she was divorced in 1684, and d. s.p. 18 April 1693, in her 28th year, being bur. at Bexley, Kent.
