M.I. He d. at Windsor, 19 Dec. 1712, s.p.m. in his 63d year, and was bur. the 26th in Westm. Abbey. Will dat. 7 June 1712, pr. 3 Jan. 1712/3- On his death the issue male of the father of the grantee, and consequently the Peerage granted with limitation to such issue, became extinct. FITZHARDINGE. Earldom. 1. Willi aji-Fitz-IIardinge Berkeley, of Berkeley I 1841 Castle, co. Glouc., eldest s. of Frederick Augustus (Berkeley), Earl ' of Berkeley, by Mary, da. of William Cole, being the sou of a . ^Z- marriage alleged to have taken place on 30 March 1785 (as sworn by 180 1 , t j iat l a dy) i but which was without a dissenting voice declared by the House of Lords, on 1 July 1811, not to be proved. He was 6. 26 Dec. 1786, in Mount street, Grosvenor sq., bap. at St. Geo. Han. sq., 25 Jan. 1787, and during the latter part of the life of his father (*) was styled (as his s. and h. ap.) Viscoust DuRSLEY( b ) ; M.P. for co. Gloucester, 1810. At his father's death, 8 Aug. 1810, he sue., under settlement to the vast estates of the family and petitioned for his writ of summons as a Peer, but his legitimacy not being proved (as above said) he thenceforth (having been Col. of the South Glouc. Militia since 1810) styled himself " Col. Berkeley," and, as such, was well known in the annals of politics, sport, fashion, anil scandal, for a long period. He was the mainstay of the " Liberal " party in the west, securing one seat (at the least) for that party in east as well as in west Gloucestershire. From 1S23 to 1830 ho claimed (unsuccessfully) the Baron;/ of Berkeley as a Barony appertaining to the castle and honor of Berkeley by tenure ( c ). He was raised to the Peerage at the corouation of William IV., being cr., 10 Sep. 1831,( d ) BARON SEGRAVE(°) OF BERKELEY 'CASTLE, co. Gloucester. He was, on 17 Aug. 1811, cr. EARL FITZ-HAR- DINGE just previous to the resignation of the Melbourne Ministry. He was Lord Lieut, for the co. of Gloucester, 1836. He d. unm. at Berkeley Castle, 10 Oct. 1857, aged 70, when all his honours became extinct. Will pr. Dec. 1857. FITZHARDINGE OF BRISTOL. Barony. 1. Matjrice-Frederick-Fitz-Hardixge Berkeley, of I 1861 Berkeley Castle, co. Gloucester, next br. to the above named Earl Fitzhardinge, being s. of Frederick Augustus (Berkeley), Earl of Berkeley, by Mary da. of William Cole, and their second son by a marriage alleged to have taken place on 30 March 1785 as before mentioned. He was 6. 3 Jan. 1788, and bap. 16 March at St. Geo. Han. sq. Entering the Naval Service, 1802, he became finally Admiral of the White, 1863. He was M.P. for Gloucester in five Parliaments, viz., 1832-33 : 1835-37 and 1841-57 ; was a Lord of the Admiralty, 1833-34 ; 1837-39; 1846-52 and 1852-57. P.C., 1855; .C.B., 1855; G.C.B., 1861. On the death of his elder br., 10 Oct. 1857, he inc. to the vast estates of the family under the will of his (») About the year 1799 "and, I think, not before," according to the evidence of his mother in 1811. ( b ) His younger brother (the first child born after the marriage in 1796) was bap. at St. Martin's in the fields 19 Nov. 1796, and registered as "Lord Durslcy, son of the Earl and Countess of Berkeley ;" all the previous ones (6) having been registered as children of the Earl of Berkeley and " Mary Cole." (°) To the Barony of Segrave the Berkeley family was (then) considered a coheir, but by the decision of the House in 1877 it would appear that the abeyance of this Barony between the families of Berkeley and Howard had (together with the Barony of Mowbray) been terminated in favour of the latter family ever sinco the time of King Richard III.
