William (Fitzwilliam, after- wards Wentworth-Fitzwilliam), Earl Fitzwilliam of Norborough, Viscount Milton, and Baron Fitz william of Milton, also Eahl Fitzwilliam, Viscount Miltown, and Baron Fitzwilliam of Lifford [I.], s. f 1 ' ub - and h.. b. 30 May 1748, at Milton, and bap. 1 July at Castor, co. Northampton ; styled Viscount Milton till 1746 when (in his 9th year) he sue. to his father's estates and titles ; ed. at Eton and at King's Coll., Cambridge ; took his seat in the House, 1769, opposing Lord North's policy as to the claims of America ; sue. 011 the death, 2 July 1782, of his maternal uncle, Charles, (Watson-Wentworth), Marquess of Rockingham (the prime minister) to the vast estates of the Wentworth family in Yorkshire, and by Royal lie, 7 Dec. 1807, took the name of Wentieorlh before that of Fitzwilliam. He entertained the Prince of Wales and about 40,000 people 2 Sep. 1789, at Wentworth, co. York ; was cr. D.C.L. of Oxford, 3 July 1793 ; Lord President of the Council, July to Dec. 1794, and again Feb. to Oct. 1806, being meantime Lord Lieut, of Ireland for a few months in 1795. He was also Lord Lieut, of the west riding of Yorkshire, 1798-1819. He m. firstly, 10 July 1770, at St. Geo. Han. sq , Charlotte, 2d da. of William (Ponsonbv), 2d Earl of Bessborouoh [L], by Caroline, da. of William (Cavendish), 3d Duke of Devonshire. She, who was 6. 29 Nov. and bap. 21 Dec. 1747, at Marylebone, d. 13 May 1822, in her 74th year at Milton House, and was bur. at Marholm. Her will pr. 1822. He m. secondly, 21 July 1823, at Bishopscourt, co. Kildare (he aged 78 and she 70) Louisa, Dow. Baroness Ponsonby of Imokilly, 4th da. of Richard (Moi.esworth), 3d Viscount Molesworth [I.], by his second wife, Mary, da. of the Ven. William Usher. She, who was 6. 23 Oct. 1749, d. 1 Sep. 1824, and was Aur. at Marholm. He d. 8 Feb. 1833, in his 85th year, at Milton House, and was bur. at Marholm. Will pr. Sep. 1833.
