FORBES. 393 IV. 1G91, 4. Alexander (Forbes), Lord Fordes of Pitsligo to [S.], only s. ami h,, took his seat in Pari. [S.], 24 May 1700; protested 1746. against the proposed Union [S.], 25 Dec. 1705, and did not attend the Pari., when that treaty was settled. He engaged in the rising of 1715 and again in that of 1745, for which last he was in 1746 attainted (under the name of " Lord Fitsligo," when his peerage as well as estate( a ) bvcamo forfeited. He claimed the latter on the ground of the misnomer (the true title being Forbes of Pitsligo), and the Court of Session gave judgment in his favour, 16 Nov. 1749, which however, on appeal, was reversed by the House of Lords, 1 Feb. 1750. He m. firstly, in or before 1713, Rebecca, da. of John Norton, of London, Merchant. He m. secondly, before 1734 (when( b ) she was living), Elizabeth Allen, an English lady. He d. at Aucherie3, 21 Dec. 1762, leaving one son, John Forbes,;") Master of Pitsligo, on whose death, also at Aucheries, 30 Aug. 1781, aged 68, the issue male of the grantee became extinct^.) ( a ) By the insurrection of 1745, Beven Scotch Peerages were forfeited by attainder. This, however, in three cases ((.hose marked with a * asterisk) was reversed by acts of Pari, in 1824, 1826 and 1854. The list is as under. Balmehinoch and Cocpar (FApkinslonc), Barony. II., there were also included ; Alexander (Erskine) Earl of Kellie, who having surrendered before 12 July 1746 (before the attainder took effect), was pardoned " James Drummond, Esq.," 1st s. and h. ap. of William, Viscodnt of Strathallan " Simon Phaser, Esq.," 1st s. and h. ap. of Simon, Lord Lovat. " James Drummond, taking upon himself the title of Duke of Perth " [i.e., James then styled Lord Drummond, attainted by act, 1 Geo. I., s. and h. ap. of the Earl of Perth, to whose dignities he was accordingly barred from succeeding]. "James Graham, late of Duntroon, taking upon himself the title of Viscount of Dundee " [i.e., the collateral heir male of that Viscountcy, cr. 16S8 ; forfeited 1690]. " John Nairn taking upon himself the title of style of Lord Nairn " [i.e., John, s. and h. of William, Lord Nairue, who was attainted by act, 1 Geo. I]. " David Ooilvie taking upon himself the title of Lord Ogiiate " [i.e., David, s. and h. ap. of John, who, but for the attainder of his brother, by act, 1 Geo. L, would have been from 1731 to 1761, Earl of Airlie. He himself, but for such attainder, would have been, in 1761, Earl of Airlie]. The list also contains the following persons connected with the Scotch nobility, viz., Lord George Murray (br. to the Duke of Athole), Lord Lewis Gordon (br. to the Duke of Gordon), "John Drummond taking upon himself the style or title of Lord John Drummond, br. to James, taking on himself the title of Duke of Perth," five of the clan of Macdonald, four of that of Cameron, &c, &c. The holders of four of these seven Peerages were condemned to death, of whom Bal- merinoch and Kilmarnock were (accordingly) beheaded, on 18 Aug. 1746; Lovat on 9 April 1747, while Cromarty was subsequently pardoned. It was claimed by the former.
