On 13 Jany. 1835 he was cr. by the King, (his wife's father) BAKON DE L'ISLE (») AND DUDLEY (») OF rENSHURST, co. Kent ; was a Lord of the Bedchamber, Jany. to April 1835 ; and Surveyor Gen. of the Duchy of Cornwall, 1832-49. On 14 March 1819 he sue. his father in the family estates and Baronetcy. He m. 13 Aug. 1S25, at her father's (then Duke of Clarence) house in Charles Street, Berkeley Sq., Midx., Sophia, 1st sister of George (Fitz Clarence), 1st Earl of Munster, illegit. da. of King William IV, by Mrs. Jordan. She, who is "said to have been the favourite da. of her royal father and [to have] occasionally acted as his ameuuensis " (•>) was raised to the rank of the da. of a Marquess by (her father's) royal warrant 21 May 1831. She d. in Kensington Palace, 10 April 1S37, having recently been appointed " housekeeper " thereof. He d. at IVusIiurst 1 March 1851 aged 51. II. 1851. 2. PiirLip (Sidney), Baron D'L'Isle and Dudley op Penshurst, 1st s. and h„ 4. 29 Jany. 182S in Bolton Street, Piccadilly, bap. at Hampton, Midx., ed. at Eton ; sometime an officer in the Royal Horse Guards. He w. 23 April 1850, at St. Geo. Han. Sq., Mary, only da. aud h. of Sir William Focus, 8th Bart, of Tngleby Manor, co. York, by Mary Jane, 2d da. of Gen. Sir Charles Ross, 6th Bart. [S.l of Balnagowan, co. lloss. She was 6. 19 May 1826. Ho thereupon .assumed the additional name of Foulis after that of Sidney by royal lie. 6 June 1850, under the Will of the said Sir W. Foulis, but relinquished it again. Family Estates... These, in 1883, consisted of 1,356 acres in Kent aud -1,S96 in the north riding of Yorkshire. Total, 9,252 acres, worth £10,232 a year. Charles in that dignity, was 21 April 1690, cr. VISCOUNT DE LONGUEVILLE. He d. 13 May 1704. See fuller particulars under " Grey de Ruthyn." (*) This extraordinary mixed title was chosen to commemorate his descent thro' his paternal grandmother, Dame Elizabeth Jane Shelley (nee Perry) from the family of Sidney, Earls of Leicester and Viscounts L'Isle, descended from Sir Henry Sidney, who m. Mary, da. of John {Dudley), the well known Duke of Northumberland and sister of Robert {Dudley) Earl of Leicester, the favourite of Queen Eliz. As to the peerage of " L'Isle," his father, in 1S24, had petitioned for the Barony of LTsle, cr. by the writ of summons of 1357, as one of the coheirs thereof thro' the families of Shelley, Perry, Sydney, Dudley, Grey, Talbot, Beauchamp, Berkeley and L'Isle. The claim was, however, not successful (see fuller account under that dignity) tho' had the claimant being seized of the manor of Kingston L'Isle, he was undoubtedly heir of the body to John Talbot, cr. 26 July 1144, Baron L'Isle of Kingston L'Isle, co. Berks, with rem. to his heirs Icing tenants of that manor. The grantee of 1S35 probably was deterred from choosing the title of " L Jslc" by the existence of the Irish Barony of "Lisle of Mountuorth," granted in 1758 to the family of Lysaght, and the prefix "de" was, also, quite in accordance to the taste for the modern antiques which prevailed in the 19th century.
