Family Estates. — These, in 1883, consisted of 15,629 acres in co. Huntingdon, 4,083 in Norfolk, and 309 in co. Cambridge. Total 20,021 acres, worth £26,203 a year. Robert de Ferrariis, Ferrars or Ferrers, 3d son I 1138 °^ Henry de Ferrers (by Bertha, his wife) one of the companions of William the Conqueror (being s. of his guardian, Walkeline, Seigneur de Ferrierres( c ) in Normandy) was 6. before 1083; sue. his 2d br. Engenulf, before 1136 in the honour of Tutbury, co. Stafford, and iu above 200 Lordships in divers counties (of which 114 were in Derbyshire), distinguished himself greatly as "Robert de Tutbury " in command of the Derbyshire forces at the battle of ( tt ) This is one of the modern anlirjues of the 19th century, framed on the same model as " De Tabley of Tabley House." Planehe, on " The Armorial bearings of the families of Ferrers and Peverel," in which that able and amusing writer remarks that tho' he does "not charge the ancient Heralds with having forged the horseshoes for De Ferrers," it is more probable that it was by the match with Marshall, that " the horse-shoe pinches." It must be noted that the Peverell connection, therein alluded to ia renounced by the author, some years later in his " The Conqueror." See infra, p. 65, note " g." ( d ) As the holders of other earlier Earldoms were frequently sty led Earls of various places according to their chief residence, &c ; the earlier Earls of Derby having resided chiefly at Tutbury Castle, were not unfrequently styled Earls of Tutbury ; being still more frequently, from their surname, styled Earls db Ferrers.
