Despeucer tec, above named, was b. Dec. 1708, sue. his Father 4 Nov. 1724, was M.P. for Bomney, 1711-61 ; for Weymouth 1761-63 ; Treasurer of the Chambers ; cr. D.C.L. of Oxford 13 April 1719 ; Chancellor of the Exchequer (under the Bute ministry) May 1762 to April 1763,;( r ) when he was sum. to the House of Lords, 19 April 1763, as LOUD LE DESPENCER, the abeyance of that Barony being thus terminated in his favour. Lord Lieut, of Bucks, May 1763 till his death, Keeper of the Wardrobe, 1763, Joint Postmaster Gen. 1770-S1, Privy Coun- cillor, F.K.S., F.S.A., &c. He m. 19 Dec. 1745, at Geo. Han. Sq„ Sarah, widow of Sir Richard Ellis, 3d Bart, (who d. s.p. 14 Jany 1742) da. and colieir of George Gol'i.d of Iver, Bucks. She d. 19th Jan. 1769 at West Wycombe, M.I. He d. there after a long illness, 11 Dec. 1781 aged 73 ap. legit. (8) when the Barony fell again into Edward (Nevill), Lord Abergavenny, one of the numerous younger sons of Ralph (Nevill), 1st Earl of Westmorland. These dignities were, of course, conferred in 1624 with the usual limitation to heirs male of his body. (°) The two coheirs were (1) Sir Francis Dashimod, Bart, (who in 1763 became Lord Le Despencer), s. and h. of Sir Francis D., Bart., by Mary, eldest surv. da. of Vere, 4th Earl of Westmorland aboveuamed, and (2) Sir Thomas Slaplcton, Bart, (father of Thomas who, in 1788, became Lord Le Despencer), s. and h. of Sir William Stapleton, Bart., by Catherine, da. of William Paul, of Braywick, Berks, by Catharine, 2d surv. da. of the said 4th Earl of Westmorland. ( r ) Wilkes says this post was given him "for his skill m casting up tavern bills." See " Wraxall ""vrl. ii, p. 18 (Edit. 1884} where it i3 said that he "far exceeded in licentiousness of conduct any model exhibited since Charles II. ;" and where there is an account of the "unholy fraternity" of 12, called "from his own name The Franciscans (but generally known as " The Hell-Fire Club ") which he had founded at Medmenham Abbey, near Marlow, and at which he " sometimes officiated as High Priest." The names of several members thereof are given in Lipscomb's " Bucks " vol. iii, p. 615) among them being Churchill (the poet), the notorious John Wilkes, &c.
