After the death of King John he adhered to the party of Louis of France and was token prisoner at the battle of Lincoln 20 May 1217. He m. Maude, da. of Geoffrey (Frrz Piers), Earl of Essex, by his first wife. Beatrice, da. and coheir of William de Sat. Having taken the cross in 1217 he d. on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, 1 June 1220, aud was bur. in Lanthony Abbey, His widow who by the death of her br. William (de Mandeville), Earl of Essex, 8 Jan. 1227, became possibly sun jure Countess of Essex hi. Roger de Dantsey, from whom she was " ere long divorced." She d. 27 Aug. 1236. VII. J 220. 2. (or confirmed as) EARL OF ESSEX 2S Apnl 122S, d . being certainly recognised as such in June 1239 when Sponsor to Prince Edward at his christening. He had previously, 20 Jan. 1236, beeu Marshal of the Household for the coronation of Eleanor, the Queen Consort ; Warden of the Cinque Ports and Sheriff of Kent, 1239-41. He distinguished himself in the wars with Wales and France ; was Warden of the Welsh Marches, &c. He took part with the Barons in 1258 but after 1263 was on the King's side, being taken prisoner at Lewes, 14 May 1264, aud being one of the 12 arbitrators for the Dictum de Kenihrorth in Oct. 1266. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Evesham and d. v.p. at Beestou Castle, co. Chester, 27 Aug. 1265.] ( a ) He left several brothers of whom "Walter of Hereford " (for so only was he known) sue. to the Shrievalty of Hereford aud Gloucester, the Lordship of Brecknock, &c. He was living (1159), 5 Hen. II., but rf. s.p. as did also his younger brothers, Heury and Mahell, who successively succeeded thereto. They had three sisters of whom (1) Margaret, who inherited the bulk of the propci 'r, m. before 1125 Humphrey de Bohun aud was ancestress of the succeeding Earls of Hereford (2) Berta m. William (sou of Philip) de Braose to whom she brought (her mother's inheritance) the Lordship of Brecknock (3) Lucia m, Herbert Fitz Herbert. ( b ) Some account of the earlier members of this family is given iu Blanche's essay (see p. 210, note " c "), who states that " the place whence the family derived its name is situated iu the arrondissement of St. Lo in the Cotentin where are still the communes of St. Andre and St. George dc Bohon," aud that " the honour of Bohon was in the possession " of " Humphrey with the beard " (the ancestor of the family) who held the Lordship of Tatterford, co.
