Gilbert (de Clare), Earl of Gloucester, and Eaul of Hertford, called " The Seel," s. and h., ft. 2 Sen. 1213 ; d. 7 Dec. 1295. Joan, Countess of Gloucester and Hertford, widow of the above Earl Gilbert, da. of King Edward I., 6. 1272 at Acre, m. 2 May 1290, the said Earl (being his second wife) when possibly those Earldoms were settled 011 her in which case she may be considered as sko jure Countess P of (Jloucester and Hertford. She d. 23 April 1307, aged 35. Ralph (Monthermer). Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, second husband of the above and, as such, sum. to Pari, by writs directed " Cvmiti Okmcestr. ct Hertf." from 0 Feb. 129S/9, to 3 Nov. 1306, though, after hia said wife's death he was sum. only as Lord Mokthermer. Countess Joan abovenamed, 6. 1291, d. s.p. 24 June 1314 (being slain at Banuockburn) when these Earldoms reverted to the Crown. VIII. 1537, 1. Edward (Seymour) Viscount Beavjchajip (so cr. 5 to June 1536) was (4 days after the death of his sister, Jane, the 1552. Queen Consort) cr. 18 Oct. 1537, EARL OP HERTFORD, "with rem. to his issue male thereafter to be begotten. "(") He was subsequently, 15 and 1G Feb. 1546/7, or. BARON SEYMOUR and DUKE OF SOMERSET,( b ) with a spec. rem. in favour (in the first place) of the ('») So stated by Nicolas and Court hope. He appears to have as yet had no issue by his said second wife. The [imperfect] copy from the pateut roll given in " Creations, 14S3 — 1646," in ap. 47th Rep. O.K. Pub. Records, is as under, " p'fato Edwardo et hered' suis masculis de corpore suo p'prio et * * * nunc uxi's sue jam p'creat' ac de eadeni * * * et alia quavis impost'iim ux'e sua deinceps legittime p'creandis." In this creation the grantee is called "Edward Sainctmaur, Kit., Viscount Beauchamp," being called Edward Sainetmayr, Kut.," in the creation of the Viscountcy of Beauchamp (5 June 1536), the rem. of which is (the ordinary one) to heirs male of his body. On the 6 Feb. 1546/7, nine days after the death of Henry VIII., the Chief Secretary, Sir William Paget, made deposition before the Privy Council that the late King had signified to him his intention of making the following creations in the peerage, viz. [1] " My Lord of Hertford to be Treasurer and Earl Marshall of Euglaud and Duke of Somerset, Exeter, or Hertford, and [2] his son to be Eri.e of Wilteshire, if he be Duke of Hertford * * * * « ; [3] My Lorde of Essex to be M.vrqcis OF Essex * * * ; [ I] the Viscount Lisle to be Great Chamberlain and Eru: if CovBNTKIS * * * ; psj the Lord Writhcsley to be Eule of Winthf.jTer » * * [6] Sir Thomas Seymour to be Lord Seymour of Sudeley and Admiral of England * * * [7] Sir Richard Richc to be a Baron * * * [S] Sir John Bellinger to be a Baron [9] iS4r William iVitlouyhby to be a Baron [10] Sir Edmund Sheffield to be a Barou [and 11] Sir Christopher Dauby to be a Baron." Tea days later "it was ordered by the Hinges Majeste with thadvyse of his hole couusayle that the persones before specified
