She, who was b. 5 March 1793, rf. of apoplexy 13 June 1857. He d. at Firle Place, 20 Jan. 1877, in his 86th year. Viscountcy,&c.[I.] ' V. Henry Edward Hall Gage, by Sophia Selina, da. of Sir Charles Knightlet, 3d Bart., of Fawsley, co. Northampton, which Henry E. H. Gage, was 1st s. and h. ap. of the hist Viscount, but d. v.p. 8 Sep. 1875, aged 51. He was b. 2 April 1854, at Fawsley afsd. ; ed. at Eton and at Ch. Ch., Oxford ; matric, 31 May 1873 ; sue. to the peerage, 20 Jan. 1877. Family Estates. — These, in 1883, consisted of 12,352 acres in Sussex, valued at £13,337 a year. Principal Residence. Firle Place, near Lewes, Sussex. GAINSBOROUGH. Earldom. 1. Edward (Noel), Viscount Hampden, was cr. 1 Dec I 1082 1682 ' EARL ov GAINS BOKO UGH, (") co. Lincoln, with a spec. rem. failing heirs male of his body to his brothers Baptist Noel anil John Noel, " Esquires." He was s. and h. of Baptist (Noel), 3d Viscount Camfden, by his third wife, Hester da. and coheir of Thomas (Wotton;, 2d Baron Wotton ; was bap. 27 Jan. 1640/1 at Boughton Malherbe, Kent; M.P. for co. Rutland, 1661-79, for Hants 1679-81 ; Lord Lieut, of Hants, 1676-87 ;( b ) was cr. v.p. 3 Feb. 1680/1, BARON NOEL OF TICHFIELD, co. Southampton, with a like spec. rem. in favour of his brothers as afsd ; sue. his father 29 Oct. 1682, as Viscount Campden [1628], Bauon Noel of Ridlington [1617] and Baron Hicks of Ilmington [1628] and was, a few weeks afterwards, or. an Earl as afsd. He win Lord Lieut, of Rutland 1682-88,( b ) and Capt. of the Queen Dowagers Keg. of Foot. He wi. firstly, May 1661, Elizabeth 1st da. and coheir of Thomas (Wuiotiiesley), 4th Earl of Southampton, by his 1st wife, Rachel, da. of Daniel de Massue, Lord de Rdvigny in France. By her he acquired the estate rf Tichfield, from whence he took the title of his Barony. He m. secondly Mary, widow of Sir James Worsley, 3d Bart (who d. 1676) da. of the Hon. James Herbert, of Kingsey, Bucks (2d s. of Philip, 4th Earl of Pembroke), by Jane, da. of Sir Robert Spiller. He d. 1689. Will pr. June 1689. His widow, who lived at Chilton, Bucks, d. 6 April 1693 in her 45th year and was bur. at Great Mintem, Dorset. M.I. Her will pr. 1694. ( a ) The family does not appear to have been owners of the Manor of Gainsborough. It is stated in Stark's History of Gaiiuburyh," that they " are said to have built or inhabited a house, which once existed there, called Red Hall." See " N. 40," 7th S., vii, 88.
