His widow is probably the " Elizabeth, Lady St. Clair," bar. 7 Nov. 17S3, at St. Maryleboue. XIII. 1776, If. He m. secondly, 18 Sep, 1316, Isabella Mary, yst. da. of Alexander Chatto, of Miunhouse, co. Roxburgh. He d. 30 Sep. 1863, aged 95, at Pilmuir, iu Torquay, co. Devon.( c ) His widow d. 5 Jan. 1875. XIV. 1863. 5. .Iames (St. Clair), Lord Sinclair [S.], 1st s. and h. by first wife, b, 3 July 1803, at Herdmanstoun ; cd. at Win- chester ; sometime Capt. iu the Grenadier Guards ; sue. to the pecragi [S.J, 30 John Paterson, of Preston Hall. He assumed the name of St. Clair, and d. uum. at Dysart, 14 May 17S9. On his death the heirship of line devolved on the descendants of his sister (the only one who had issue) Margaret, wife of John Thomson, of Charle- ton, co. Fife, but the estates passed under the will of James St. Clair (who hut for the attainder would have been Lord Sinclair) to Sir James Erakine, Bart., afterwards 2d Earl of Rosslyn, who was grandson aud heir of Catharine, the second sister of the said James St. Clair. (*) According to the decision respecting this title, 25 April 1782. ( l >) A similar case occurred in the Earldom of Buchan {S.J which in 1695 devolved, in consequence of settlements of 1017 and 1625, on David (Erskine), Lord Cardrosa [S.J, cousin and heir male of James (Erskine), Earl of Buchan, the late Earl, whose wife was the heiress of the old Earls. The said David, therefore, aud his descendants, Earls of Buchan, had consequently no descent whatever from the old Earls, whose Earldom, together with the precedency thereof, they enjoyed. <") His elder br., Matthew, b. 17 Feb. 1732, d. young and v. p. ( d ) It was held that the forfeiture came to an end iu 1762 by the extinction of the attainted line that took under the first rem. in the novodamus of 1677 anil that those who took under the second [special] remainder thereiu were not affected by it. Consequently no act to reverse the attainder was required. See vol. iv, p. 416, note " b," for a similar case, 3116 " Kintore." ( c ) He was thus entitled to his peerage for 86 years and 9 months, and was fur above 81 years in actual possession thereof.
