Professor Pollard, the weight of whose authority on this period of history is universally recognised, tells me that he finds Cromwell addressed as "Secretary" as late as 1539 and he inclines to the opinion, in which I concur with him, that he had no colleague in that office, vacating it on becoming Lord Great Chamberlain in Apr. 1540, at which date two Secretaries were appointed.
