The Ghospel

Chap. VIII.

Going over al Galilee with his traine, 4. he preacheth to the Jewes in parables because of their reprobation, 9. but to his Disciples manifestly; because he wil not for the Jewes incredulity have his comming frustrate: 19. signifying also that we are his kinne (though we be Gentils) and not his carnal brethren the Jewes. 22. To whom also (signified by the Gerasens) after the tempest in his sleep (that is, in his death) and calme in his resurrection, he commeth: but they preferring their temporals before his presence, he leaveth them againe. 41. Likewise comming to cure the Jewes (who were borne when the Gentils sickned about Abrahams time) he is prevented with the faith of the Gentils, and then the Jewes die, but them also in the end he wil restore.

AND it came to passe afterward, and he made his journey by cities and townes preaching and evangelizing the Kingdom of God; and the Twelve with him, 2and some women that had been cured of wicked Spirits and infirmities; Mr. 16, 9.* Marie which is called Magdalene, out of whom seven Divels were gone forth, 3and Joane the wife of Chusa Herods Procurator, and Susan, and c aliæ multæc many others that ″ did minister unto him of their substance.

The Ghospel upon the Sunday of Sexagesime.4And Mt. 13, 1.
Mr. 4, 1.
* when a very great multitude assembled and hastned out of the cities unto him, he said by a similitude. 5The sower went forth to sow his seed. And whiles he soweth, some fel by the way side, and was troden upon, and the foules of the aire did eate it. 6And othersome fel upon the rocke: and being shot up, it withered, because it had not moisture. 7And othersome fel among thornes, and the thornes growing up withal, choked it. 8And othersome fel upon good ground; and being shot up, yealded fruit an hundred fold. Saying these things he cried: He that hath eares to heare, let him heare.

9And his Disciples asked him what this parable was. 10To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mysterie of the Kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, [1] that Es. 6, 9.* seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand. 11And the parable is this: The seed, is the Word of God. 12And they besides the way, are those that heare, then the Divel commeth, and taketh the Word out of their hart, lest beleeving they be saved. 13For they upon the rock; such as when they heare, with joy receave the Word: and these have no roots; because [2] for a time they beleeve, and in time of tentation they revolt. 14And that which fel into thornes, are they that have heard, and going their wayes, are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and render not fruit. 15And that upon good ground, are they which in a good and very good hart, hearing the word, doe retaine it, and yeald fruit in patience.✠

16And no man lighting a candel doth cover it with a vessel, or put it under a bed; but setteth it upon a candelsticke, that they that enter in, may see the light. 17For there is not any thing secret, that shal not be made manifest; nor hid, that shal not be knowen, and come abrode. 18See
