Scotland 1634; b. 14 May. 1580; d. 1656, having m. 16 Feb. 1613. Louisa, only child and sole heir of John Gordon, Lord of Glenluce, dean of "Salisbury, brother of George, 4th Earl of Huntly. and had issue. On the death of his descendant. Sir William Gordon, 6th Baronet, 5 Mar. 1795, his male descendants are supposed to have become extinct. JAMES GORDOX, of Letterfourie (said to be descended from Sir James Gordon, adm. of Scotland 1513, youngest brother of Adam. Earl of Sutherland, Lord of Aboyne, sons of George, 2nd Earl of Huntlv), was served heir male of Sir WiUiani Gordon, 6th Baronet, 22 April, 1806 (see pedigree Playfairs Baronetage of Scotland, p. clxxxv. et seq.); d. 24 Dec. 1843, having m. in 1801, Mary, eldest dau. and heir of WilUam Glendonwvn : she d. May, 1845, having had, (1) Sir w'illiam, succeeded his father, lieut.-col. in the army, major late 66th regt.; b. 26 Dec. 1803; d. unm. 5 Dec. 1861. (2) Robert Glendonwyn, present representative. (3) Helen. „ (4) Mary, d. 11 Oct. 1861, having m. 26 Dec. 1837, to Hon. Aber- deen, said to be descended from Sii- James Gordon, of Lesmore, created a Baeonet 2 Sept. 1625. Burke's Peerage 1828 to 1837. GRAHAM, (Sir) Robert James, "of Esk, Cumberland ;" on reference to the article Graham, of Norton Conyers, in the Baronetage, it will be noticed that Sir Richard Graham (3rd Baro- net), Viscount Preston (ext. 1739), was found guilty of high treason and sentenced to death, but pardoned, 1691. It is concluded that his estates and the title of Baronet were forfeited. The resumption of the Baronetcy did not appear in any printed work until 1819, when it was assumed by Rov. William Graham (great-grandson of 2nd Baronet), who was also one of the claimants to the Earldom of Annan- dale and Hartfell. See Herald and Genealogist, vol. iv. pp. 277, 369. GRANT, Sir Alexander, " of Dalvey," prin- cipal and vice-chancellor Edinburgh Uni- versity since 1868, great-great-grandson of Sir Patrick Grant, of Liverladinem. (See also pedigree in Baroxetage.) The Baboxetct. DUXCAN' GEAXT [2nd son of John Grant (d. 1508), by Margaret his ^vife, dau. of Sir James Ogilvy, of Desk- ford] ; m. Mary, dau. of Hugh Rose, baron of Kilravock, and had with other issue 2 sons, (1) John, grandfather (according to Betham) of Sir James Grant, of Dalvey, King's advocate, created a Baronet of Xova Scotia" 1688, with remainder to his heirs male what.soever; he d. s. p. 1695, having m. dau. of Sir Gideon Scott, of Highchester, and sister of Walter, Earl of Tarras (B. POL w ARTE). (2) Sweton, m. Jane Shaw, of Rotliiemurchus, and was (accord- ing to Betham) great-great-grandfather of SIR PATRICK, of Inverladinem, 2nd Baronet, who is said to have succeeded to the Dalvej' and other estates on the death of Sir James Grant, as nearest heir male, and also to have claimed the baronetcy. " This claim having been in- vestigated was allowed and a regiilar return thereof made, which return is taken notice of in the certificate of armorial bearings issued by Alexander Brodie, of Brodie, Lyon king of arms, dated 12 Jan. 1753" (Betham's Baronetage, vol. v. p. 35). He d. 1756, aged 101, leaving issue. Either he or his son. Sir Alexander, resumed the title, which had been dormant since 1695. HAMILTON, Sir Robert North Collie, " of Silverton Hill, co. Lanark," descended from Sir Robert Hamilton of Silverton Hill, who is said to have been created a Baronet of Nova Scotia about 1646, but of this creation there seems to be no evidence. (See pedigree in Babox"ETAGE.) HAMILTON, (Sir) William, - of Preston, co. Haddington," col. R.A. comdg. r.a. W. dis- trict 1881, son of (Sir) William Hamilton, pro- fessor of logic and metaphysics Edinburgh Univer- sity, who assumed the Baronetcy by reason (as it is said) of being served heir male general to Sir Robert Hamilton, 2nd Baronet, who d. 1701. SIR "WILLIAM HAMILTON (son of Sir Thomas Hamilton Knt.), created a Baroxet of XOVA Scotia, rith re- mainder to his heirs male whatsoever, 5 Nov. 1673, had 3 daus. and was succeeded by his brother Sir Robert, a celebrated rebel commander, who d. unm. 1701. Professor Hamilton was, according to the pedigree in Burke's Peerage 1846, great-great- grandson of Robert Hamilton, of Airdrie, who is there stated as "having but a limited estate," subsequently altered into " having burtbeued his estate " ; he is merely stated to be a kinsman of the 2nd Baronet.
