JOHX HAY, of Smitlifield (only sou of John, 3rd Lord Hay, of Tester, by the heiress of Smithfield — see M. Tweed- DALE), m. Janet Scott, and had with other issue 2 sons, /I/ Thomas, of Smithfield, father of John and grand- father of SIR James Hay, of Smithfield, an esquire of the body to JAMES VI. 1624 ; created a Bahoxet op Nova Scotia 20 July, 1635 (not recorded in great seal register) ; on tlie death of his grandson Sir James, Srd Baronet, in 1683, his male line failed, and the Baronetcy remained unclaimed until 1805, when James Hay, m.d. (see below) , claimed it, and is said to have been served heir by a jury at Peebles 9 Nov. of that year. /2/ John, of Kingsmeadows, m. ^Marion Ker, and had 3 sons. His descendant in the 5th generation, viz. : — JAMES HAY, M.D. (eldest son of John Hay, of Haystoun, CO. HAY, Sir John, of Alderston, created a Baro- net OF Nova Scotia 22 Feb. 1703, with re- mainder to his heirs male, line extinct on the death of his grandson ; there should be no difficulty in obtaining the full particulars of Sir John's brother Alexander, the father of Thomas, Lord Huntingdon of Session, and ancestor of the present Baronet, According to Sir Bernard Burke's extinct Baro- netage this title became extinct in 1825, but it was restored to his Peerage and Baronetage published in 1853 ; it is needless to add that from the terms of the remainder it is almost impossible that the creation could have become extinct. INNES, (Sir) John, of Balveny, co. BanflE; s. his father in 1878 ; b. 25 Nov. 1840. Seat— Edengight House, Banffshire. The Baronetcy. Sir ROBERT INNES, of Innermarkie and Balveny, which he acquired from Lord Ochiltree 1615 (descended in the 4th generation from Walter, 1st laird of Innermarkie 1480, see Duke of Ro.xburghe), created a Baronet of Nova Scotia 12 Jan. 1628 C:- according to Playfair 12 Feb. 1631) ; the descent of this baronetcy is variously stated. SIR JOHN INNES, of Edengight, assumed the Baronetcy on the death of his kinsman Sir William in 1817, without service or proof of pedigree, as heir male of tlie 1st Baronet, claiming to be descended from John Innes, of Edengight, said to be great-uncle of the 1st Baronet, but no such person appears in the pedigree published in Douglas's Baronage ; b. 23 June, 1757 ; d. 23 Mar. 1829, having m. 1796. Hants, mil. 1870/5, lieut. late 22nd Bombay N.I.; b. 1834 ; only son of (Sir) David Innes (Bart.), of Oxton and Cockstoune, n.b. assumed a Baronetcy created 20 Mar, 1628, and of which nothing more seems to be known. Title acknowledged by Lodge, KeUy, &c. Lawson of Gatherley Castle. Know all wUom this may concern that I. Henry Lawson, hitlierto known as Henry Lawson. of Gatherley Castle, in the county of York. Esquire, have taken and assumed the name of De Burgh in addition to my former simiame of Lawson, and that I shall henceforth be known and sign myself by the name and designation of Henry De Burgh Lawson. And whereas His Majesty King Charles II. by his letters patent bearing date the sixth day of July, in the year of Our Lord one thousand six liundred and sixty-five, conferred the rank, style, and title of a Baronot upon John Lawson, of Burgh Hall, near Cat- teryck. in tiie county of York, and the heirs male lawfully begotten of his body. And whereas the said Sir John Lawson, so created a Baronet as aforesaid, had issue by Catherine Howard, his la^vful wife, three sons, namely, John Lawson, the eldest son. Henry Lawson, the second son. and William Law- son, the third son. That the said John Lawson, eldest sou of the said Sir John Lawson, died in the lifetime of his said father without heirs lawfully begotten of his body; that the said Henry Lawson, second son aforesaid, succeeded his father in the said Baronetcy aforesaid. And whereas upon the death of the late Sir Henry Lawson, of Biu-gh Hall aforesaid, Bnrone*-, who died'without heirs lawfully begotten of his body.
