BARONETAGE— CHAOS. C91 registered arms in the Lyon Office without style or badge of a Baronet, but in 1770 (his grandson) "Sir Hector" was served heir of his father, "Sir Alexander," who had died in April of that year. Title acknowledged by Burke, Lodge, Walford's County Families, and all lists of Baronets. MACKENZIE, Sir James Jobln Eaudoll, " of Scatwell, co. Eoss," descended from (Sir) Kenneth Mackenzie, of Scatwell, said to have been created a Baronet of Xova Scotia 22 Feb. 1702 3, but of this creation there seems to be no evidence, although the 2nd Baronet, 4th Baronet, and present Baronet, each recorded their arms in the Lyon office as Baronets. (See pedigree in Baeoxetage). MALCOLM, (Sie) James, of Balbeadie and Grange, co. Fife, and of Liverpool, mer- chant, said to be grandson of (Sir) John Malcolm, who, according to Sir Bernard Burke, in his Peer- age of 1879, succeeded as 6th Baronet 25 Oct. 180.5. This Baronetcy was originally granted 26 July, 1665, to John Malcolm, of Balbeadie (see Milne's List), and appears in the pedigree, as stated for the first time in Burke's Peerage 1879, to have been trans- mitted through four generations to Sir Michael, of Innerteil, who died 5 May, 1793. The estate of Balbeadie is traced back by service of heirships through three generations from Sir John Malcobn, who cLaimed the Baronetcy in 1805 (on the death of Sir .James, of Grange, 5th Baronet), to a Michael Malcolm, who is stated to be brother of the 1st Baronet and son of another John Mal- colm. The last-named John Malcolm, original grantee of the lands of Balbeadie, sheriff and depute of Fife, 1665, d. 8 Feb. 1692 ; he is said to have been the father of Sir John, of Innerteil. to whom the creation as a Baronet in 1665 (twenty-seven years before his father's death) is attributed. It seems far more probable that the former John Malcolm was really the 1st Baronet. (The pedigree as stated involves the improbabilities that the person to whom the Baronetcy was granted in 1665 was the son of a lady bom in 1626, and that it was claimed by his grandson in 1805. one hundi-ed and sixty years later.) This point shovdd be cleared up, and the later stages of the pedigree require con- firmation, especially as to the man-iage (not men- tioned) of John, 6th Baronet, and the birth of his sons. Douglas gives no pedigree of this family, while Playfair could only supply a few disjointed notes when his work was published. In Burke's Peerage a notice of the Baronetcy is given from 1828 to 186", it is omitted in 1868, and next year the follo'nlng notice appears : — •• ftir James Malcolm, Bart, of Balbeadie and Grange, co. Fife; b. 11 April. Ib23; s. upon the death of his cousin. Sir John Malcolm, 24 Dec. 1865, and his succession has just been registerefl in the Lyon Office, * but the details of his lineage are not vet completed.* " This notice is repeated in 1870. but Hart. with the last sentence « omitte<l. in which form it is also reprinted from 1871 to 1876, together with an account from the 5th Baronet. The clause '• and his succession has just been registered in the Lyon Office " disappears in 1877, and in 1879 appears the pedigree above referred to. Title acknowledged by Burke, Lodge, Walford's County Families, and all lists of Baronets. MOXCEIEFF, Eev. (Sir) Hexry "^ellwood, D.D. great-grandson of Eev. (Sir) William Moncrieff, minister of Blackford, who assumed (after 1744), -without service or proof of pedigree, the Xova Scotia Baronetcy conferred upon Sir John Moncrieff, of Moncrieff, 22 April, 1626, with re- mainder to his heii's male. (See pedigree in Baeoxetage.) The minister of Blackford was 4th in descent from Archibald, minister of Abemethy, Perthsh. who was of the court of high commission 1619, and who is said to have been " documented brother german " of William, father of the 1st Baronet, and in 1601, according to Playfair (p. 99;, he was appointed " Prior and Commendator of the Priory and Monastery of Elcho, with a right to the whole rents, &c. belonging thereto." William, father of the 1st Baronet, having had. according to the same authority, a charter of that priory, &c. 30 Xov. 1570. The pedigree in Douglas's Baronage only mentions William and David as brothers of William, father of 1st Baronet, though a note is appended that he is said to have had another brother Archibald, minister of Abemethy, while the pedigree in Play- fair's Baronetage gives 6 brothers and 4 sisters, but nnaccom- panie<l by any evidence to prove that Archibald was the next brother of William, father of the 1st Baronet. HOWELL-MUEBAY, (SiE) Murray, of Chal- don House, Fulham, of H.B.M. consulate Pernambuco (only son of Edwin Samuel Hervey Howell, of London); d. 1 Aug. 1878, having as- sumed the Nova Scotia Baronetcy conferred upon Sir William Murray, of Stanhope, and his heirs male. 13 Feb. 1664, his mother, Catherine Emily, being cLiu. of Sir John Murray, Bart, of Stanhope, who d. 1848. Title acknowledged by Lodge and Walford 1878. MUEEAY, (Sir) Johx, of Philiphaugh, co. Selkirk, J.p. d.l. served heir male to his kinsman (Sir) Joseph Albert Murray (Bart.), Count of the Austrian Empii'e, •• by the Sheriff in Chancery in Edinburgh 4 Aug. 1863." This patent is said by Milne to have been limited to the heirs male of the body. The Baroxetct. Sir AT.KYAV nF.n MTTIRAY, of Melgtmd (posthumous son of Alexander Murray, of Melgund, and his -ivife Janet — dau. of Sir James Rocheid. Bart. — who re-m. 4 April, 1 691. to Hon. Sir David Dalrvmple. of Hailes. created a Baeo>"ET OF Xova Scotia 8 May," nOO) ; b. 2 Aug. 1682. created a Baroset of Xova Scotia 29 Jan. 1704. to him and his heirs male; d. 1713, having m. Grizel Kynynmound. heiress of Kynyn- mound (who re-m. 19 Aug. 1714. to Thomas Kennedy, of Kirk- hill, baron of the exchequer), and had an only son, 2Z
