JOHN NAPIER, of Merchistoun, the inventor of loga- rithms (son of Sir Archibald Napier, master of the mint iu Scotland, and gi-eat-grandson of Sir Alexander Napier, descended from John de Napier, of Dumbartonshire 1305) ; d. 3 April, 1617, aged 67 ; bur. in St. (xOes', Edinburgh; m. 1st (charter dated 23 Feb. 1571), Elizabeth, dau. of Sir James Stir- ling, of Keir, and had a son, [1] Sir Archibald, gentleman of the privy chamber to Jajies VI. WILLIAM JOHN jnXLIKEN-NAPIER (son of Robert John Milliken-Napier, who assumed the name of MilVken in compliance it is sftiil vnth. the will of his maternal grandfather) took the title of Baronet, bemg served. 17 Mar. 1817, heir male general of the above-named Archibald (died 1683), 3rd Baron Napier; d. 4 Feb. 1852, aged 64, having m. 11 Nov. 1815, Eliza Christian, youngest dau. of John Stirling, Esq. of Kipix-ndavie, Perthshu-e; she d. 3 Mar. 1860, having had 2 sons and a dau. /I/ Robert John Milliken, who succeeded. /2/ John Stirling, of Merchistoun, co. Renfrew, .T.p. D.L.; b. 7 May, 1820; m. 4 Mar. 1845, .Janet, only child of Andrew Brown, Esq. of Auchintorlie, Renfrewshire, and has 2 sons and a dau. (2) Elizabeth Christian Stirling, m. 10 Oct. 1867, to Archi- bald Cumpell Douglas, Esq. of Mains, Dumbartonshire, s. p. This family claims to be descended from Robert Napier, of Drumhony, 1628, and after of Culcreuch, co. Stirling, half- brother of Archibald. 1st Lord Napier (see above), and in Burke's Peerage, eds. 1837/41, the father of the present rejjre- sentative (born 1788) is saiil to be 3rd in <lescent from this Robert, viz., son of Robert John, son of Alexander, son of Robert, of Culcreuch aforesaid. In the editions of the same work, 1846 52, Robert, of Culcreuch, is said to be ancestor of William, father of Robert John, aforesaid (Alexander being omitted), and since 1853 the descent has been published in the same work as follows : William Milliken, b. 1788 ; son of Robert John, b. 1765; sou of William, b. 1712; son of John, b. 1665; son of Alexander, b. 1621; son of Robert, of Culcreuch, aforesaid. It would be interesting to know which of these three descents was under consideration when after a lapse of 134 years William MiUiken Napier was served heir male general of Archibald, 3rd Baron Napier, on 17 March, 1817. No descent of the Baronetcy appears in Douglas or Playfair. Title acknowledged by Burke, Lodge, Walford's County Families, and all lists of Baronets. NICOLSON, Adm. (Sir) Frederick William Erskine, c.b. vice-chairman Thames con- servancy board and late superintendent Woolwich dockyard, only son of Major-Gen. (Sir) William Nicolson, who assumed the Nova Scotia Baronetcy, created 16 Jan. 1637, on the death of (Sir) David, 19 Oct. 1808. The BARONETCY. SIR THOilAS NICOLSON, of Camock, created a BaroxeT OF Nova SCOTIA 16 Jan. 1637 ; m. Isobel, dau. of Walter Henderson, of Granton ; he d. 8 Jan. 1646, having had with other issue 2 sons, [1] Sir Thomas, 2nd Baronet, lord advocate of Scotland 1649, who died 1664, leaving Sir Thomas, 3rd Baronet, who died 1670, leaving Sir Thomas, 4th Baronet, d. 9 June, 1686, aged 18. [2] Sir John, of Tillicoultrie, Knt.; died 1683, having had it is said with other issue, 2 sons, viz.: (1) Sir Thomas, 5th Baronet, who died 1707, leaving Sir George, 6th Baronet, who d. 1771, leaving 2 sons. Sir Walter, 7th Baronet, d. 1788, and Sir David, 8th Baronet, d. unm. 1808. (2) William, said to be 2nd son of Sir John, and lieut.-col. in one of the Scotch regiments serving in the States General, and to have died 1720, leaving a family, of whom his eldest son George returned to Scotland, and purchased Tarviston, a small property in Lanarksh. and d. 1769 (49 years after his father), leaving an only son, Major-Gen. (Sir) William, who assumed the Baronetcy on the death of Sir David, 8th Baronet, 19 Oct. 1808, and d. 1820 (51 years after his father). A notice of this Baronetcy appears in Burke's Peerage since 1826, but the only detailed pedigree, of which the foregoing is a summary, appears in Sir Bernard Burke's Peerage and Baronetage for 1879. Evidence in support of the descent of Major-Gen. Nicolson from Sir John Nicolson of Tillicoultrie appears to be required. Arms — Not registered. Title acknowledged by Burke, Lodge, Walford's County Families, and all lists of Baronets. NICOLSON, (Sir) Arthur Bolt, capt. 4th regt. (d. 14 July, 1879), son of late Capt. James Nicolson, r.n. ; s. his cousin ( Sir) Arthur Nicolson, of Lochend, who in 1826 was served heir male of Sir John Nicolson, of Nicolson and Less- wade, who was created a Baronet (N.s.) 2 July, 1629. The earliest mention I have discovered of this title is in Burke's Peerage 1834. The " Melbourne Argus" records the death of Sir Arthur Bolt Nicolson. " He had long been resident in Australia, having held a commission in the 4th foot when that regiment served in New South Wales in 1831. A few years later he sold out and returned to England. In 1853 he went out to Victoria, where he acted f<jr a time as commissioner of gold fields." He held
