PALMER, (Sib) Chaeles James, of Domey Court, Windsor. J.P. d.l. Bucks, bar.-at-law l.T. 1863, only surviving son of Rev. (Sir) Henr*- Palmer, heir by devise of Sii" Charles Harcourt Palmer, Bart, who is said to have died %-ithoat legi- timate issue 1838, when the creation of 1621 would have become extinct. It appears that Henry wa.'- 2nd son of Sii- Charles Harcourt Palmer. The elder died 1852, and was bur. as Charles Palmer, Esq. Henry also does not appear to have claimed the baronetcy, and was bur. as Rev. Henry Palmer. (See Herald and Genealogist, vol. v. pp. 88, 377/8.) Title acknowledged by Lodge, Walford, Kelly. PAYNE, SiE Christopher, of St. Christophers, major-gen. of the Leeward Islands (see Payne-Galwey, Bart.), created a Baronet 31 Oct. 1737, and had a son, SIR GILLIES, 2nd Baronet, of Tempsford, Beds.; d. 1801, leaving 2 sons, (1) John (3rd Baronet), d. 1803, leaving a sou (Sir) Charles. (2) Peter, M.P. Beds, who by a decree in the court of chancery was declared to be the eldest sou of Sir Gillies, bom in wed- lock; this decree was however reversed by the Lord Chancellor Jan. 1829, and an issue was directed to be tried as to the legiti- macy of both John and Peter Payne, sous of the 2nd Baronet, which however has not yet been tried. (Sir) Philip 3Xonoux Payne claims to be 7th Baronet, as descended from (Sir) Peter, il.P. Beds. (Sir) Salusbury GUlies Payne claims to be 5th Baronet, as descended from (Sir) Peter, M.P. Beds. A pedigree of the above appears in Burke's Peerage 1839, and more at length in the editions of 1865 to 1868, and from the latter date until 1878 a clause appeared reciting the peirticiilars referring to the separate claims. Baronet of Nova Scotia, the patent of creation not recorded. On 13 Nov. 1630. he had seisine of the Barony of Pencaitland in New Brunswick from Sir William Alexander, and according to Milne's list had a precept the same day for a Baronetcy, with remainder to his heirs male. His son. Sir Robert, 2nd Baronet, ' sold Pencaitland, and d. s. p. 1642, and was s. by his cousin, Sir James, named below. ] Although there is no record of the limitations of this creation, yet Sir James, 3rd Baronet, recorded his arms at the Lyon Office in 1673, presumably as heir male of the 1st Baronet. The 8th Baronet so called assimied the title, and the present repre- sentative being served heir male in 1837 has been acknow- I ledged by the Ljon office.
