These papyri date from the time of Seti I (about 1350 B. C.). Critical commentary was made of Pleyte's work by F. Chabas, “Sur quelques données des Papyrus Rollin," Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache . . ., vol. 7, 1869, pp. 57-63. (Compare J. Dümichen, "Ueber einige altägyptische Rechnungen aus der Zeit des Rampsinit," Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache . . ., vol. 8, 1870, pp. 41-46). Eisenlohr's corrections are brought together in A. Eisenlohr, "The Rollin papyri and baking calculations," Proceeding: of the Society of Biblical Archeology, vol. 19, 1897, pp. 91-104, 115-120, 147-155, 252-265. To a certain extent Eisenlohr took account of a notable work listed later, namely Spiegelberg (1896). Stripped of footnotes the first paragraph of Spiegelberg's preface is as follows: "Ein Teil der Papyri, mit welchen ich die vorliegende Arbeit beschÄftigt, ist bereits vor mehr als 25 Jahren von Pleyte herausgegeben und erklärt worden. Wer auf dem Boden einer historischen Wissenschaft steht, wird die Bedeutung dieses ersten Entzifierungsversuchs bei dem damaligen Stande der Ägyptologie anerkennen, anderseits aber begreifen, dass jene Arbeit den heutigen Anforderungen der Wissenschaft in keiner Weise mehr geniigt. Überdies war die Ausgabe von vornherein nach des Verfassers eigener Ansicht für palaeographische Zwecke völlig wertlos, und doch besteht gerade in letzterer Hinsicht ein ganz hervorragender Wert der Dokumente, welche uns ein vorziigliches Bild der Uncialschrift zur Zeit der Regierung Setis I geben."
Pages 28-37 of Pleyte's work are occupied with a "Traité sur les signes numériques;" this is followed by "Les fractions" (pp. 37-40). The first sentence on page 28 is: "Je crois nécessaire avant de terminer le sujet des Papyrus Rollin, de rectifier et d'amplifier mes notes concernant les signes numériques communiquées dans la Zeitschrift 1867, p. Iss.," that is, in "La prononciation phonétique des noms de nombres égyptiens," Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache . . ., 1867, pp. 1-3, 9-14, 26-31. Pleyte here sums up everything he found on the subject in hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic, and Coptic texts, making use of the important suggestion of Goodwin (1864) concerning section numbering of the Leyden papyrus I, 350; compare Goodwin (1867).
